Top 5 Tricks for Anti-Aging Hair Color

Some of us are not natural blondes. Oh, but we got the premier hair stylist to make us look like we are. Others of us had grey hair sightings about a decade before we were ready to look at them. But thanks to our hair color, it's our little secret.

As you're looking for the perfect kind of hairstyle, there's no doubt about the fact that the right kind of color should definitely play a significant role. It's kind of like the pretty wrapping paper on a present in the sense that if your color is beautiful, it gives your hair style that extra "pop".

However, here's the thing: In order to achieve this look, you usually can't find it in a $7 box at the grocery store. And when you go to a salon, it can be a bit pricey to get the celebrity kind of look. That's why it's a good idea to know some of the tricks of the trade when it comes to discovering how to keep your color from aging before its time, so that you can get more "color bang" for your buck:

Shampoo with ease. Nothing turns your hair color from dazzling to dull quicker than either washing your hair too soon after getting it colored (or re-colored), shampooing it too often or using too harsh of a shampoo. Some good rules of thumb to remember is to wait at least 24-48 hours after your chemical processing to wash it, to wash it every other (or every other other) day and to stay away from clarifying and dandruff shampoos.

Watch the heat. No matter what, one rule for keeping your hair (and hairstyles) lasting longer is to keep it away from as much heat as you possibly can. When the hair is exposed to heat, it causes the hair shafts to open up; this plays a direct role in your hair color fading faster than you would like. So, keep the hair drying and flat ironing to a minimum. Also, extreme exposure to sunlight tends to cause your hair some hair-fading issues as well, so if you're going to be laying out, take a scarf or hat along.

Be careful about chlorine, chemicals and salt water. If you've recently gone to your hair stylist for an anti grey hair treatment, one way to keep it from lasting long is to do a lot of swimming (whether in the pool or in the ocean) or over-processing your hair with chemicals. If swimming is a part of your workout regimen, make sure to put a leave-in conditioner in your hair before you get into the water and to thoroughly rinse your hair out when you're done. While we're on the subject of chemicals, gels, mousses and sprays (especially if they have a high amount of alcohol content in them) will also strip your hair over time, so be careful not to overdo it when it comes to using them.

Try and stay with one color. If you're someone who likes change, you might want to avoid taking that out on your hair. It strips the shaft and keeps the hair color from being as brilliant as you would like. So, if you want to be a redhead, stick with that. If you want to be a brunette, don't make real drastic transitions for a while.

Stick to a regimen. Some people's hair color fades simply because they don't color it enough. Most stylists will recommend that you see them for a touch-up about every six weeks. Therefore, make sure to put that on your to-do list so that your color can remain appearing as fresh as the day you first got it.
