Long Luscious Locks? Not if You Fall for These Myths

NEED Some Maintenance?

Many women will go to any lengths, no pun intended, to grow long, luscious locks. Once hair is shorn, it can feel like forever before it grows back. Unfortunately, there are many myths that surround hair. Not the least of which involve tips and tricks for growing longer hair more quickly. If you hope to have gorgeous tresses in the future, don't fall for these five myths:

1.Frequent Trims are a Must According to an assistant professor of dermatology at the University of California, San Francisco, Dr. Paradi Mirmirani, cutting the ends off of your hair will do nothing to make it grow faster. Healthy hair looks longer, which is why people possess the mistaken notion that cutting hair makes it grow faster. Ask your stylist to trim off your split ends, and no more, every three months. It won't help your hair grow, but it will make it look healthier.

2.Shampoo Stops Working This is an oldie but goodie. Shampoo never stops working. What may happen, however, is that your hair has changing needs. For instance, if you start coloring your hair, experience a dry scalp in the cold weather or increase your use of styling products and tools, your favorite shampoo may no longer do the job. It's not your shampoo that's at fault; it's simply a change in needs. If you keep the same hair habits, keep the same shampoo for as long as you like.

3.Skipping Washings is Better for Your Scalp Not true, says Dr. Jeffrey Benabio from Kaiser Permanente in San Diego. This dermatologist gives us the skinny on skipping shampoos: Your scalp produces the same amount of oil whether or not you shampoo once a day or once a week. Use your own discretion when it comes to washing your hair. No matter how frequently, or infrequently, you shampoo, it has no affect on your hair's rate of growth.

4.Brush Hair Frequently Brushing your hair doesn't distribute natural oils, nor does it stimulate blood flow to your scalp. What brushing can do, if overdone, is break your hair. Broken hair lacks shine and looks generally unhealthy. Only brush your hair to detangle it, and do so with the proper comb or brush for your hair type. Stay away from natural bristles, no matter which brush you choose. These unevenly-textured bristles are too harsh for your growing hair.

5.Rinse Hair in Cold Water You may have been told by your stylist to rinse your hair in icy-cold water. Don't listen! Your hair contains zero living cells. This means that it doesn't react to temperature. Icy-cold water will do nothing to help your hair grow and, in fact, could give you a rather sizable headache. If you adore your hot shower in the morning, keep taking it.

There is very little that you can do to make your hair grow any quicker than it naturally would. While there are things that you can do to make your hair look healthier or shinier, none of these things will increase its rate of growth. Sit back, be patient, treat your hair kindly and enjoy the many different looks you can create with your growing locks.
