Maintaining Dental Health During the Holiday Seasons

The holiday seasons can mean a lot of different things to different people. However, one of the most popular and common holiday traditions involves eating foods heavy in sugar. Whether it’s candy canes, cakes and pies, or even sweet holiday beverages, the amount of sugar that is consumed during this time of the year can be considerable. Unfortunately, this can have damaging effects on dental health, increasing the likelihood of cavities and other dental problems beginning to develop.

Aside from the types of foods and beverages which are traditionally consumed during the holiday season, the increase in travel can also harm the overall oral health of many during the holiday season. When visiting with friends and relatives, especially overnight, it can be easy to get out of the routine of brushing and flossing regularly, which can increase the likelihood of a cavity developing.

In order to avoid any of the negative consequences associated with poor dental health, there are a number of different steps that individuals can take to help ensure that they maintain their dental health over the holidays. The following are some of the most useful tips for maintaining dental health during the holiday season:
  • Keep a travel kit with toothbrush, toothpaste, and dental floss – making sure you have these essential items with you wherever you go can help to ensure that your teeth stay fresh and clean regardless of where your holiday travels take you.
  • Keep the snacks to a minimum – it’s okay to eat sweet things during the holiday season, as long as you do it in moderation. Don’t go overboard with the sugar-filled treats, though.
  • Avoid sweet drinks – over the holidays, sweet drinks like eggnog and cider are often the drink of choice. However, the amount of sugar that these beverages can contain is sometimes overwhelming. Try to avoid these drinks as much as possible, and opt for less sugary alternatives such as red wine or club soda with lime.
  • Keep an emergency dental contact – you never know when a dental emergency is going to strike, but if it happens over the holiday season, you may have a hard time finding a dentist who is available to see you. Because delaying treatment can lead to dental problems worsening quickly, it’s a good idea to have an emergency dental contact just in case you do need to see someone.
  • Don’t avoid dental procedures before the holidays – it may seem like a good idea to put off an important dental procedure until after the holiday season is over, but the consequences that this can have are so serious that it’s just not worth the risk. If you need to have a dental procedure done before the holiday season, it’s best to get it done as soon as possible.
These are just some of the many different ways that you can work to help ensure that your dental health remains intact throughout the holiday season.

I've been told by dentists that gum can be good for oral hygiene because it produces saliva which cleans the mouth and bad breath.
