Hair Loss- Prevention is better than Cure

You can experience hair loss due to various causes like mineral deficiency, poor diet, pollution, stress,  genetics and medications. Regular usage of caps and helmets can also increase your hair fall. Regardless of the causes of hair loss, you have to take care of your hair. Here are a few steps that can help you protect your hair and prevent hair loss.

Follow a healthy diet

It is crucial to follow a healthy diet so that your hair gets all the necessary nutrients. As your hair is made up of protein, you will have to consume a protein rich diet. Your diet should also include folic acid, biotin, vitamin B and vitamin C, which are needed to keep your scalp is healthy.

Hair stress can also cause hair fall

Repeated stress on your hair strands can result in hair loss. Avoid accessories that exert pressure on your hair. Do not wear tight cornrows, pigtails and pony tails since they can end up snapping your hair or pulling it out from the roots. Always avoid applying chemicals like permanent hair color, hair dye on your hair since they dry and snap your hair stands.

Few chemicals can also inflame your hair follicle, resulting in hair fall. Do not subject your hair to  frequent drying and heating procedures. Heat can weaken your hair protein, and can make your hair brittle, fragile and result in hair fall. So, minimize the usage of hair dryers, curlers, straighteners and hot brushes, to reduce hair fall.

Wash your hair gently, using a mild shampoo

By knowing the right way of washing your hair, you can prevent hair loss. This will also keep your scalp and hair clean without any kind of infection. When you use mild shampoos, your hair will look voluminous too. Do not brush wet hair since it can result in snapping off your hair strands. If you have to comb your wet hair, remember to use a wide-toothed comb. Also, do not comb your hair very frequently as that can increase hair loss.

Consider scalp massage

You can massage the scalp daily to increase circulation in a particular area. Use only your fingertips to massage from your neck towards the front of your head. Also, always massage your hair in circular motion. Coconut milk can prove to be an excellent home remedy for preventing hair loss since it contains plant derivatives which nourishes your tissue. You can also add Fenugreek (Methi) leaves paste to coconut milk to further enhance its effectiveness.

You can also consider massaging your hair and scalp using coconut oil along with lime juice to arrest a receding hairline.  Regular massage with lukewarm oil also helps in stimulating your hair follicles. This is also the best way to get rid of fungal infections and dandruff. By massaging your scalp regularly with oil, you can also increase blood circulation.

A scientific study has found that application of onion juice substantially helps people with patchy hair-loss, alopecia areata, male/female pattern baldness or even in general hair-thinning. So if you find that you are experiencing significant hair-fall these days, grab a humble onion (raw), extract its juice and gently rub it on your scalp for over 5 minutes once in a week. Sure it stinks and your eyes may water, but the results are well worth it! After application you will experience a slight tingling on the scalp. You may then massage honey or pure aloe gel to soothe and condition your scalp. Leave it on for  45 minutes or so and then wash your hair. In a few months time you will find that you are losing fewer strands and your hair is bountiful than ever. Onion's anti-bacterial action also helps with itchy scalp & dandruff issues. The best part about this remedy is that it's completely safe & natural without any side-effects that you normally experience with medications like propecia and minoxidil. By the way, did you know that rubbing a raw onion on your scalp also gets rid of common cold? You'll have to try it to believe it!

Turn to acupressure / reflexology

Try rubbing the nails of both your hands against each other to prevent hair loss. Read more about this in the post Rubbing nails cures hair loss.

Avoid going out in the sun

You can experience sunburns even on your scalp, similar to the sunburns in other body parts. This can break your hair strands and cause hair loss. If you have to go out in the sun, make sure you apply sunscreen on the scalp or  use a conditioner which contains sunscreen to prevent hair fall.

  4. While bathing, it is better to massage scalp for 10 to 15 minutes. Massage stimulates the blood circulation in the scalp. Do it everyday, which will lessen hair-loss.
