What would happen if you slept with makeup on

What's the worst that could happen if you slept with your makeup on?

Once in a while, if you are too tired and drop off to sleep without removing makeup, it's fine says Dr Malavika Kohli, dermatologist and cosmetologist with Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai.

Dr Schultz or DermTV also is of the same view. He says that not much is going to happen if you happen to forget to take off your make-up and only remove it the next morning in the shower.

Specially if your makeup is very simple with just a hint of lipstick/lipbalm, light foundation and absolutely no eye makeup, then not removing it at night isn't such a big deal, says Dr. Schultz.

woman sleeping with makeupHowever you shouldn't make it a regular affair. Sleeping with makeup also implies that you haven't washed your face the whole day and the makeup that you have on has already attracted dirt, grime, grease and bacteria and that means you will be sleeping with all those pollutants buried in your pores.

Particularly, if your makeup is too heavy, then cleaning it off every night is a must. According to Dr. Robin Ashinoff, director of cosmetic dermatology at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey, if makeup stays on for too long, the natural process of exfoliating the skin is inhibited and this in turn can leave the skin looking dull.

Especially if your eyes are heavily done with eyeshadow, mascara, kajal (kohl), eyeliner, et al, then you should definitely take it off. Mascara when left on for a long time can  make your eyelashes firm & inflexible and you could lose a couple eyelashes just by rubbing your eyes or rolling in bed.

Eyeshadow, on the other hand could dry your eyelid skin and cause inflammation or even styes, while the carbon in your kajal could cause discoloration. Heavy foundations can clog the pores and cause pimples, blemishes, blackheads or rashes, more so, if your skin is oily, acne-prone or sensitive.

So if you do slip up and go to sleep with your makeup, you can try some damage-control options next morning. Start by washing your face with a salicylic acid-based cleanser, then apply a purifying or detoxifying mask to draw out impurities and finish with an antioxidant-based moisturizer.

If you broke out because of your makeup, then change your makeup. It should not clog your pores. If it does it is full of cheap fillers and/or has bismuth. Change your makeup.

Yup, we all have those nights. It feels grim when you wake up in the morning though and your face feels clammy, you look in the mirror and a panda stares back at you. I always swear never again on those mornings - til the next time!
