Food For Thought - Feeding The Brain

The brain is the most amazing organ in the human body, but for some reason it is often virtually ignored. There are numerous magazines and books on the care of your body, but none addressed specifically for your brain. So it is not surprising that few people do the things necessary to keep this vital organ happy and working at its best.

Did you know, for instance, that there are certain foods that you could be eating that would help your brain and its 20 billion cells to percolate at their very best? Here are five brain boosting foods that you should try to incorporate in your daily diet. Who knows? Your brain just might thank you later by unleashing your inner Einstein.

Fish
Studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids, which can be found in such fatty fish as salmon, herring and tuna, may help prevent the brain from aging, and that people who consume more of these fatty acids do better on memory and problem solving tests than those who don’t. Consuming these omega-3 fatty acids is especially important for older and middle-aged adults.

Nuts
Nuts are rich in vitamin E and folate, both of which are great for the brain. In addition, Japanese scientists have discovered that Vitamin E may even be able to reverse some degenerative brain diseases.

Beets
Spark your brain with increased blood flow by eating beets. Scientists at Wake Forest have discovered that there are natural nitrates in beets that will help dilate blood vessels, which will then speed oxygen and important nutrients to your brain.

Is it possible that something as delectable as dark chocolate could also be good for your brain? Well, it is true. Dark chocolate contain cocoa flavonols, which improves blood flow to the brain. In addition, dark chocolate also contains chemicals in it that can release endorphins in your body, which can make you feel happier. Lastly, dark chocolate also has a little caffeine, which can give your brain a little needed stimulation.

Blueberries

Blueberries are another tasty treat that can help your brain function at its best. These little berries contain compounds, which scientists have discovered can boost neuron signals in the brain. Blueberries have also been shown to slow cognitive decline in elderly people.
