Top 5 Tips for Soft Beautiful Feet

Although the summer is the time of year when people tend to be the most proactive when it comes to caring for their feet, the truth of the matter is having feet that are both soft and beautiful should not be seen as a seasonal thing. Well-manicured feet are not just pleasing to look at, but they also help us to feel more comfortable as we're going about our day (because there aren't callouses and jagged nails getting in our way).

One way to keep our feet tame is to set up regular pedicure appointments. But, if that's something you can't really fit into your schedule or your budget, here are five things that you can do from home that will still have your toes looking and feeling absolutely beautiful.

File your feet. A foot file can range anywhere from (around) $10 for a PedEgg to almost $50 for a Bliss Diamancel #10 Classic Buffer. It all depends on how "deep" you want to go because while the cheaper files tend to buff down the surface layers of dry skin, the more expensive options are able to remove corns, callouses and even soften hardened heels. Whatever you decide, it's a good starting point for any pedicure because pretty feet start with skin that has been thoroughly filed.

Soak your feet. A good foot soak doesn't just help to soften your skin, but it's also extremely soothing for the muscles and bones in your feet. There are soaks that you can buy at a local department or beauty supply store, or you can make your own. All you have to do is fill up a basin with warm water and pour in either three tablespoons of Epsom salt or baking soda. You can even add a bit of perfumed oil like jasmine or lavender. Soak your feet for about 10 minutes and then you'll be ready for Step 3.

Exfoliate your feet. Once your skin is soft and supple, this is the ideal time to do some exfoliating so that new skin cells can come to the surface of your feet (this is great in case your wear a lot of heels or road bike shoes and you've had a few layers of rough skin build up on your feet as a direct result). One effective exfoliant that you can make from home consists of combining 2 cups of Epsom salt with ¼ cup of petroleum jelly. Use the mixture to slough off any dry patches on your feet or toes. After 5 minutes, wash the solution off with a mild soap and rinse your feet thoroughly with warm water.

Massage your feet. A lot of people sing the praises of reflexology. A big part of the reason is because the nerve endings in our feet are directly connected to a lot of the organs that we have throughout our entire body. So, when we get this kind of treatment, it does more than simply soothe our feet; it can revitalize the body as well. You can do your own novice form of reflexology by taking out 15 minutes or so to massage your toes, your heels and your ankles. It's a quick and easy way to pamper yourself, while thanking your feet for all of the work that they do.

Moisturize. One of the best things that you can do for beautiful feet is also something that is extremely cheap. All you need is a pair of socks and some petroleum jelly or olive oil that you warmed up in the microwave for about 10 seconds. Once you take the bowl out of the microwave, apply a generous amount of the liquid to your feet (don't forget to put some in between your toes too!) and then put on your socks. You can leave them on for about an hour, or even better, keep them on throughout the night. Once you take them off, trim your nails, apply a coat of polish and you'll have some of the softest feet and prettiest toes in town!

put body butter on them at night, and then immediately put socks on. leave the socks on over night, it allows the body butter to soak in without rubbing off on the sheets.
