Do-It-Yourself Skin Care for Spring

Turn your bathroom into a beauty counter with homemade skin treatments.  Spring has just begun and sunnier days are ahead, so now’s the time to build your supply of sunscreen, lip balm and moisturizers.  By cooking up your own skin care collection, you’ll save cash that you can stash for your next getaway.  Plus, DIY skin care means using natural ingredients with no added chemicals.

Try these elixirs to start:
Coconut Oil Sunscreen
  • 6 tbsp. coconut oil
  • 3 tbsp. shea butter
  • 2 tbsp. zinc oxide
Sunnier days mean stronger rays.  Protect your skin with this coconut oil sunscreen, which calls for zinc oxide--a natural sun-blocker that filters out UVA/UVB rays.  Whisk together coconut oil and shea butter in a medium bowl until well mixed.  Then stir in the zinc oxide.  Keep fresh in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
Soothing Lip Balm
  • 1 tsp. shredded beeswax
  • 2 tsp. olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp. lanolin
  • 1 tsp. honey
  • 1 natural vitamin E softgel capsule
  • Essential oil
Ever get burnt lips at the beach? The vitamin E in this soothing balm can help reduce damage from free radicals.  Start by melting the beeswax, olive oil, lanolin and vitamin E softgel capsule in the microwave, stirring occasionally until the beeswax is melted.   Add a couple drops of essential oil, such as peppermint, lavender or lemon.  Then mix in the honey, cover and let set until completely cool.
Oat Foot Soak
  • 1-1/2 cups powdered milk
  • 3/4 cup baking soda
  • 3/4 dry oats (finely ground, using a food processor)
  • 3 tbsp. cornstarch
  • 2 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 2 tsp. cinnamon
Flip flops and sandals can wear and tear the tender skin on your feet.  Soak those puppies in this calming foot bath.  Add all ingredients to a basin, then add boiling water and stir it up. Let mixture cool to a comfortable soaking temperature.  Tip: lay river rocks on the bottom of the basin for a massage-like treatment.
