Home Remedies for flatulence/gas

Distension of the stomach and intestines due to wind is called flatulence. Normally wind is formed during the process of digestion, but is passed out in the form of flatus. If not, or if formed in excess, this leads to distension of the intestine and stomach. In Ayurveda, this condition is called ‘adhmana’. Due to distension, the patient experiences discomfort, loss of appetite, indigestion, breathlessness, headache and sleeplessness.
Causes:
Strong, high fiber food such as cabbage, whole wheat bread and beans which play beneficial role in preventing cancer, are often cited as culprits in producing gas. It looks like the choice is between gas and cancer. Gaseous distension can also be caused by lactose intolerance. People who lack the enzyme called lactase, which breaks down the complex milk sugar lactose, often find themselves passing large amounts of gas after drinking milk. Among others, greasy fried food, and pulses also cause gas.
Dos and Don’ts
1) Avoid heavy smoking.
2) Cut down drastically on your daily number of cold drinks and cups of tea.
3) Cut off milk, fried food, pulses, beans and sweets, if these are found to increase gas.
4) Milk would not be easily digestible. Curds and buttermilk would be useful.
5) Eat less than appetite demands.
6) Eat slowly, fully concentrating on the food - this prevents swallowing of air.
7) Leave aside all worries and anxieties while eating.
8) Avoid onions, tomatoes, potatoes, peas, beans, dals and sweets in excess.
9) Take rest after taking food.
10) Any hard labor immediately after taking food should be avoided.
Home Remedies for flatulence
1) Take a tsp of ajowan(Ajmud) seeds and roast it in a pan until the seeds turn red. Pour 2 cups of water into the pan and boil until the water is reduced to half . Take this decoction once a day for a safe and sure remedy for gaseous distension of the abdomen
2) Fry a piece of asafetida in some ghee and take half a tsp thrice a day to get relief from gaseous distension of abdomen.
3) To relieve discomfort due to gaseous distension of the abdomen just chew a few cardamoms.
4) Cumin(jeera) powder and jaggery are rolled in to small balls and consumed from time to time. Or you could make a decoction of the seeds to drink.
5) Crush a few fenugreek(methi) seeds with a pinch of rock salt for quick relief from flatulence.
6) Mix a tsp each of liquorice(‘Mulhati’ in Hindi and ‘jesthtamadhu’ in Kannada) and sugar in water and drink from time to time.
Ayurvedic Remedies
1) Hingastaka choorna can be taken in a dose of one teaspoonful twice a day with luke warm water.
2) Kumari Asava ( ayurvedic medicine with aloe vera as an ingredient. ‘Kumari’ means aloe) 20 ml with equal quantity of lukewarm water twice a day is also a good choice in gas problem.
3) Ark pudina(mint) (liquid) or Ark pudina(mint) pearls (Baidyanath) if taken give results within minutes.

Baking Soda sounds great, however, from someone whose friend just suffered from hypoxic brain damage from to much baking soda in his system, Would not advise it.The baking soda turns the blood alkilyine and causes heart and brain problems. First hand experience.

Chewing peppermint after a meal does a lot more than just freshening your breath. Peppermint contains menthol that soothes the digestive muscles. It helps in treating flatulence, bloating and abdominal pain that accompanies gas. Peppermint oil combined with caraway oil has been used since ages to treat abdominal discomfort caused by flatulence

If flatulence is a major problem, a look at your diet is important. There are foods that inherently produce gas when consumed. You must take care to avoid such foods. These include foods such as beans, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, yeast-containing foods such as breads and cheese.Carbonated drinks produce gas too.High carbohydrate content in oats and potatoes make them the culprits for gas.Foods that produce negligible amounts of gas are rice, bananas, citrus, grapes, hard cheese, meat, eggs, peanut butter, non-carbonated beverages and yogurt made with live bacteria.

The first step in reducing flatulence is to avoid the foods that cause this problem for you. Keep in mind that people react differently to different foods. Some people have found that corn, oats and any wheat-containing product give them gas. (We will talk about food allergies in another article). Beano® is an effective product you use as a condiment, adding a few drops to your first spoonful of "offending food".Many people are unaware that milk products cause their gas, but in fact lactose intolerance is probably the major cause of bloating and excessive gas

There is a simple home test for lactose intolerance. Avoid ALL dairy and cheese products for ten days to see if your symptoms are alleviated. Then have some, if the gas and bloating returns you have your answer and you didn't have to pay for any expensive blood tests. Acidophilus is also helpful for many people. The best acidophilus is the kind that needs to be refrigerated, so don't fall for those cheap pills they sell in the chain drug stores

Since flatulence is common problem with those who eat too much and too often of fried and rich foods, eat rather hastily. If food is taken while one is tense, or as if one is on the run while he grabs or swallows his food. As a preventive and corrective measure, do not bend, sit curled up on a low sofa, immediately after taking meals as, by doing so, you will simply help the gas to build up, thereby causing bloating of abdomen which can have colicky pains. Simple self-management in dietary intake will sufficient to enable you stay free from flatulence and colic.

Take about 10 gms of tulsi juice, 10 gms of dry ginger and 20 gms of jaggery. Mix all of them together to form small tablets. Take this tablet thrice a day with water to set right your digestive process. But during the period you have this trouble, better keep fast or take only easily digestible food.

You might also try eating some active yogurt cultures available at the market to reestablish the normal flora of bacteria in the intestines. As a last resort there are activated charcoal tablets you can take to adsorb the gas, but they can interfere with digestion of vitamins, minerals, and medications so should be taken between meals or not frequently.
