Masking Varicose Veins

Varicose veins can be upsetting and frustrating to handle effectively. Aside from the pain the condition can cause, it’s hard to ignore the most overwhelming issue in dealing with them: they are ugly.
No two ways about it.

For larger varicose veins where the veins are blue, or bulging on the skin, sometimes the only solution is surgery- but maybe treatment hasn’t been successful, or is taking too long. In that case, consider the clever ways to cosmetically mask varicose veins and boost your confidence.

Ladies, it’s time to take control.
A thin layer of fake tan can be a short-term fix. If you have a specific social event you want to look your best for, even just a high street branded tanning product can hide the marks of surgery, sclerotherapy, or unsightly veins in general. However, this is only temporary and you must take care- everyone has a fake tanning horror story to their name. Don’t let your special night be yours. Get some practice in before the big day.

Of course, long skirts and trousers are an obvious solution, but largely unhelpful too. Cosmetically speaking, venturing into the world of professional make up artists could be worthwhile. Specialist cosmetics have been developed to hide serious skin blemishes such as extensive facial birthmarks, or for patients who have major medical disfigurements after serious burns- and these work brilliantly on thread veins, too.

Sometimes, with thread or spider veins, the treatment process can take an incredibly long time, with the paradox being that throughout treatment the veins can often look worse before they begin to look better. Marks from treatments can last weeks, like, for example, the injection wounds in sclerotherapy, and so a sophisticated concealment method is required.

The British Association of Skin Camouflage has a great website with information about palate-based creams that can be tailored to individual skin tone, magically concealing specific blemishes in public.

Many of these palette cosmetics require- like fake tan- a certain amount of practice in order to get the right combination of colours to match individual skin tone, so a consultation with a specialist camouflage artist can also be a helpful way to learn how to get the right foundation layer for the skin.

With a little practice, patients can get almost perfect results applying these specialist makeups themselves, successfully hiding unsightly and confidence-draining marks until treatment marks have worn off.
In the meantime, help legs out by investing in a pair of support stockings to wear under trouser on the days you don’t need your legs out.

Stockings help blood flow back up the leg by gentle compression- a light squeeze. There is a gradient to this; good stockings are tightest at the ankle and gradually less tight as they go up the leg. Be warned, though- bad stockings won’t be graduated, and won’t help encourage blood flow. In fact, ill-fitting stockings are actually worse than no stockings at all, since they can end up restricting blood flow: the exact opposite of what we want to achieve. Shop around for the best deals and don’t be afraid to seek advice from your doctor.

Take a multi-pronged approach to dealing with your varicose veins, and in no time at all you’ll master how to walk tall and proud- regardless of what stage in the treatment process you are.

  3. Compression stockings are specially designed to steadily squeeze your legs to improve your circulation. They are often tightest at the ankle and get gradually looser as they go further up your leg. This encourages your blood to flow upwards towards your heart.

Avoid long periods of sitting or standing. If you have to stand, shift your weight from one leg to the other every few minutes.
When possible, rest with your feet up (above the level of your heart). You could lie down with your legs resting on three or four pillows, for example.
