  1. How can you keep long hair healthy?

Keeping it all one length helps to cut down on styling time (which can help prevent damage), and keeping it longer also helps keep it straight because it weighs it down and natural waves are less pronounced.
Your main problem: Straightening. These irons are VERY damaging on your hair. I only use mine 2x a week max for that very reason. If you don't have to have it straight, then don't. On the weekends, just scrunch your natural curls and let it air dry (especially easy now that its summer). This is immensly helpful in keeping it healthy.

In general, go to a stylist and have them show you how to straighten it by blow drying alone. It works very good -- not the same as a straightener, but pretty close. It involves having fairly wet hair, and drying a section at a time with a flattening brush (you'll need to ask at the salon). It takes a bit more time, but you have to take care of your hair otherwise you'll just end up cutting it off from too much damage.
The first rule of straightening: the hair must be COMPLETELY dry before you touch it with the iron. If there is any steam, you are frying your cuticle and then any damage (even just combing or brushing) will cause frizz, split ends and breakage.

I also use a smoothing shampoo... I like Biolage by Matrix because it prevents knots right in the shower so you don't get knots and damage. It also helps hair to feel lighter when you have longer hair.
And finally, ask in the salon about a heat protective product... it coats the cuticle so there is less damage while styling. It can cause buildup but if you color that doesn't matter.

    Here is my procedure
Dont go out and buy anything expensive.
First: Purchase a mild Shampoo (To Clarify hair, I will explain why)

Second: TRIM your hair ends (May 1 1/2 to 2 inches)

Third: Here's the magic part: Mix olive oil, almond oil, coconut oil, avocado oil and a "little" honey, (honey u will have to heat so it can blend). Either leave on ALL day or all night (if all nite, DONT use honey)
Use a teaspoon of every oil and honey,.... a little more if ur hair is long or a little less if ur hair is short
Repeat this 3-4 times a week, your hair will grow like a weed, fortify, reconstruct, moisturize, soften & remove all frizz I promise,..... and it will be super shiny!!!!

The clairifying shampoo will help take the oil off your hair when u shower
You can also use a conditioner but get a light conditioner that wont wiegh ur hair down, becuz u can over condition, I use herbl essences "clean happy" conditioner.
When I do this at nite, I wake up, shampoo & condition, rinse and style as usual. Has worked for years

Protect your hair of the sun with a hat or a special hairspray. Comb it daily. Eat vegetables and fruit. Or try this: Message olive oil into you hair and rinse it after 2 hours (do it twice a week). If you consider these things than your hair will be super healthy!!!

She says she never travels with makeup on, “There’s nothing like old, cakey powder- ick!”
For extra comfort and warmth she brings along her own shawl, from Maison de Famille - which she makes a papoose out of to block out germs and sounds so she can arrive looking well rested and healthy!
