Tips to beat monsoon blues

people stranded in rainsMonsoons, for some, are all about cloudy skies with little sunlight, fast spreading water-borne diseases, and almost a depressive state of mind. And how can you forget about the increased mosquito menace? But there are ways to beat the blues and enjoy the beauty and wonderment of this season with a sunny smile. Refer to some of the tips and suggestions by clicking here. Here are some more tips:

* Make sure that the water you drink is pure and free from impurities. Use a suitable water purification method to purify your drinking water. A small piece of alum can also be added in your drinking water for a couple of seconds before drinking to prevent water-borne diseases like diarrhea and dysentery.

* Consume less milk, fruit juices and leafy vegetables as harmful bacteria found in these foods multiply faster during the rains. But drink butter-milk, kokum water and the like as much as you can since the body loses a lot of water by way of water-borne ailments.

* During this season it’s quite possible that you will feel bloated and full all the time, so if indigestion and burping is bothering you, consume a tsp of ginger juice with honey/jaggery twice or thrice a day.

* Use more of turmeric (for its antiseptic and anti-bacterial properties), ginger and garlic (these aid digestion) in your culinary preparations.

* Put neem leaves in your bathing water to rid yourself or prevent skin infections.

* Torrential rains play havoc and disrupt life, but do they have the same devastating effects on the mosquito population. Unfortunately, the answer is a big NO. Mosquitoes thrive and multiply in millions to spread diseases like malaria together with the dreadful ones like dengue and chikangunya. So be extra careful during this season. Grow holy basil, marigold along with other insect eating plants in your garden to repel mosquitoes. See to it that there are no puddles that provide a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes around your house. Instead of using harmful mosquito repellants or sprays, you can go the herbal way and smear neem oil to protect yourself. Hop over to this must-read, highly informative article by Cindy for more.

* Eucalyptus (nilgiri) oil also works wonders in the treatment of cold, cough, sinus and flu.

* Panchakarma, an Ayurvedic cleansing procedure is supposed to work best during monsoons.

Skin care for the bride

KajolEvery bride wishes to look ravishing, gorgeous and the loveliest on her D-day. But beauty cannot be gained merely by a few hours of make-up. It should reflect through her skin and her glowing complexion. This can be achieved if she plans her beauty schedule well in advance. She should begin at least a month before. All the extra pains and pampering that she indulges in, during this period will be worth it. It will make her skin glow with radiance; the right make-up on her wedding day will make her stand out from the crowd and she’ll definitely be the cynosure of all eyes.

If she prefers to go the herbal (home-made) way she can use besan (gram-flour) to wash her face instead of soaps or face-washes. She can also pamper herself with a facial at home, if she wishes to. Refer to the procedure here. As for face packs, she can choose the one most suitable for her skin to brighten her complexion. There are several ones mentioned in the previous posts. Just browse through the posts under the label Home made beauty aids and pick your choice. It is as simple as that.

Application of a very simple face-pack with 3 tbsp of besan, ¼ tsp turmeric, 1 tsp lime juice and enough milk to form a smooth paste is also quite effective. (Those with dry skins can add milk-cream). You will see that a month long use of any such home-made pack, your skin will have taken on a sheen as never before.

Bath:

Twice a week she should set aside some time for an oil bath. For this, apply coconut oil or til (sesame, gingelly) oil on your body with circular motions. Relax for half an hour. Then bathe in warm water after rubbing the following mixture all over your body. Mix equal parts of besan, green gram (moong) and a tsp of turmeric powder to a paste. You will find that this pack successfully cleanses your skin but does not leave your skin dry as soaps do. This body cleansing mask also works well.

All this excessive scrubbing, brushing and mollycoddling is not narcissism - remember you are doing it for your D-day. Right now, if it is getting on your nerves, let us stop this discussion. We’ll continue this in another post some other day. Do wait for it!

Good things about sugar

spoonful of sugarSugar has always come under flak for being a high-calorie food. Considered as taboo for the diabetics, it has also been associated with the risks of causing obesity, hypoglycemia, hardening of arteries ,fatigue, violent behavior, hyperactivity, aching extremities, tooth decay and many other ailments, of which some could well be just over-hyped.

Dr Fredric Brandt, popularly known as ‘The Baron of Botox’ has denounced it further, hitting exactly where it hurts, especially, for women who are fond of sugar but too obsessed with their looks. He has said, "In a nutshell, sugar hastens the degradation of elastin and collagen, both key skin proteins. In other words, it actively ages you." He believes that by simply reducing your sugar intake, you can turn back the clock by ten years and improve the texture, tone and radiance of your skin. Hardly has this news sizzled out, there is another report linking it to age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a top cause of vision loss.

But some of us have a sweet tooth and just can’t resist the cravings for those sweet dishes laden with sugar and oozing of desi ghee. Jaggery, which has loads of iron in it, is considered as a better substitute for sugar, though, some wouldn’t prefer the altered taste and look of the dishes prepared with it. Is sugar so bad that you have you avoid it completely? Or would you like to go by the dictum ‘Anything in moderation is not bad.’?

Are some of the popular remedies for back pain just useless?

What do you do when back pain strikes you unexpectedly? If you take adequate rest and maintain a proper sitting posture it usually disappears within a day or a two. Sometimes the excruciating pain persists in spite of doing everything. Has it got to do something with some of the remedies that you try out? Well, maybe. At least according to a recent article in the Daily Mail, some of the popular remedies are not just useless, they are dangerous.

There is bad news especially for those who seek recourse to osteopathy for their back pain. The article mentions: “The latest research suggests that spinal manipulation techniques used by chiropractors and osteopaths can cause serious, potentially fatal, problems when used on the upper spine. Yet lower spine manipulation has been widely shown to assist a speedy recovery and can be an effective alternative to drugs or surgery for many people.Acupuncture, Shiatsu massage, gentle yoga have been given the green signal. Pilates performed with a poor technique is also ineffective according to Stuart McGill, a professor of spine biomechanics and chair of the kinesiology department at the University of Waterloo in Ontario.

Now for the most intriguing and surprising of all the revelations. All these days we all were under the impression that sleeping on hard mattresses is good for the back. The article however states otherwise. Quoting:

Sleeping on a hard mattress has long been recommended by medical experts as an antidote to back pain. But according to the results of a study in the Lancet, orthopaedic specialists found that softer mattresses offered back pain sufferers the most relief. Softer mattresses may put less pressure on the shoulders and hips, allowing people to sleep more naturally, the researchers found.” Somehow, I’m finding it difficult to digest this bit of news. I’ve had always suffered from back pain whenever I slept on mattresses that were too soft. But I must admit that a very hard one is also very uncomfortable, a moderately hard one is the one which I feel is the best for my back.

Honey for a smooth skin

honey in a jarspoonful of honeyHoney is a humectant, which means it attracts and retains moisture. Hence it is used in a variety of moisturizing products including cleansers, creams, shampoos and conditioners. It is also not irritating to the skin, so it can be safely used on sensitive skin and even on babies (though it’s not really necessary). Even smearing pure honey on your skin without adding any other ingredients moisturizes it. Honey is simply too good for the skin. It can also be used effectively on puffy eyes and for lightening dark circles. Here are two homemade recipes with honey which you can use to nourish and pamper your skin.

Is daydreaming good for you

When you are stressed and the worst seems to be coming true for you, what will you do? You can call up your friends and pour your heart out. But can you do that always?

If you go and relate your sob stories each time you are down in the dumps, even to your best friends, you will be labeled as an insufferable bore. They may avoid you like plague.

You surely wouldn’t like that to happen. Would you?

Exercising your hands and fingers

Exercising hands.Though we can’t do much to alter the shape and size of our hands or arms, proper care and grooming can keep them attractive. Exercising hands, wrists and fingers kindles blood circulation in those parts and helps maintain their flexibility and suppleness. And as mentioned in the earlier post, it prevents or delays arthritis in your later years. Here are some simple and easy exercises recommended by one of the yoga instructors. Do these in your free time regularly for great looking agile hands. Exercising hands

* Imagine that you have just rinsed your hands in water. Now shake them vigorously to get rid of water. This relaxes the hands and stretches the fingers.

* Clench your fists tightly for a second and then throw open the fingers as wide as possible.

* Put your hands out in front of you, palm down. Press the fingers tightly against each other and then thrust them apart as widely as possible. Do it 6 times,

* Rest each palm on your shoulder and holding thus rotate your arms from the shoulder joint clockwise and anticlockwise 5 times each.

* Place the palms of your hands together, elbows apart as if you were about to pray. Now pressing the hands hard together throw them forward in a rapid jerky movement. Then bring them back to the vertical position again. Keep palms together throughout the whole movement. Repeat it 6 times.

* Hold a pencil between the thumb and first finger of your left hand. Now, without using your right hand twist the pencil between each finger, then back again. Repeat once, then do it with your right hand.

Home-made after-shave lotion

If you find waxing your arms and legs painful and messy, you can consider shaving. Shaving is one of the quickest and easiest methods of hair-removal, with the added advantage of getting the top layer of the skin mildly exfoliated. Exfoliation is one of the ways that rids the skin of dead cells and keeps it fresh and glowing. Unlike waxing, one doesn’t have to wait for hair to grow to a certain length. Also, one can shave at any time in the comforts of one’s home. A very convenient way to feel and look clean. And, contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t make your hair grow thicker and darker. It is pretty safe and can be resorted to even when one is undergoing laser treatment. In fact, it is best to freshly shave the area just prior to treatment.

shaving legs

Shaving is best done while you bathe. Soaking in a warm bath or shower for a few minutes softens the hair so that it is easier to cut. Use a mild soap or shaving foam to work up lather on the surface of the skin. This moisturizes and protects your skin while shaving. If using an electric shaver, dust surface with talc before shaving. Use firm, clean strokes working against the hair growth. Glide the razor carefully to avoid nicks and cuts. The razor should do the work, not you. Rinse and blot dry skin. You may apply body lotion or an after shave tonic now. Avoid using deodorant or an anti-perspirant for at least a day.

Here’s a refreshing after-shave tonic which you can douse yourself with.

Ingredients:

4 tablespoons of orange juice
4 tablespoons of glycerine
little eau de toilette

Combine to obtain a cool, fresh tonic. Apply liberally all over your shaved skin.
