Is Exercising After Dental Implants Permitted?

Dental implant surgery is done to replace missing tooth or teeth. Dental implants are metal posts or frames, usually made of titanium, that are surgically positioned into the jawbone beneath your gums and are used to support artificial tooth.

Once in place, the dentist will be able to to mount replacement teeth onto them. The benefits of implants is that dentures mounted on them won't slip or shift in the mouth which is an extremely helpful advantage over ordinary dentures when eating and speaking. They also feel and look more natural.

It may take several visits to the dentist to get dental implants installed. A good dentist will ensure that the procedure is as painless and comfortable as possible. After your dental implants have been installed, s/he will provide you with post care instructions.

You'll be asked to avoid extremely hot foods and straw usage for the first few days after surgery. Liquids, pureed foods such as puddings, yogurt, soups, and milkshakes are permitted.

After a few days, you'll be able to progress to solid foods. Brushing, twice a day and using a mouth wash after implant placement is recommended.

However, care should be taken to avoid scrubbing the implant area. Brush with gentle stokes using a soft brush and be careful when you go over the implant.

Also many people consider exercise to be an important part of their life. They love to stay in shape and feel great after working out. If you exercise on a regular basis, you may be wondering whether you can get back to the gym after receiving dental implants.

While Dr. Brian Levitin of Mile High Smiles understands the urge to get back to your workout routine as soon as possible, he highly recommends you wait at least a week before exercising again. Immediately after a dental implant procedure or most dental visits, your goal should be to relax and take it easy.Bending, lifting, or any strenuous activity may lead to pain, bleeding, and swelling should be avoided for the first 4 days or even more.

If you engage in strenuous activity too soon, the blood in your body can cause issues with the surgical site. The increased blood flow and circulation in the area may lead to more pain, swelling, and bleeding.

Therefore, it’s better to be safe than sorry and simply wait at least a week before hitting the gym again.
However, if you must do some type of exercise shortly after, make sure it’s something along the lines of light stretching.

Running, jumping, or burpees are not permitted. If you experience any throbbing or bleeding after you resume your regular exercise routine, be sure to stop immediately. Keep in mind that you can exercise the day of your procedure if you’d like.

Although it may be difficult for you to put your active lifestyle on hold for a week, doing so can ensure less pain and a faster healing process. If you have further questions regarding exercising after dental implants, contact Dr. Levitin at Mile High Smiles.
