DIY Cleanser & Toner with Lemon Grass as well as Lemon Grass Tea / Kahsayam for Cold & Fever

With the monsoon in full swing, it isn't quite surprising to find those once dry lemon grass (Cymbopogon) plants burgeoning with full vigour in your garden. Now is the time to take some of those leaves and prepare a DIY cleanser and toner.

Lemon Grass Cleanser & Toner Recipe:
You'll need 4-5 lemon grass leaves and 2 cups of water.

Procedure:
lemon grass leaf folded
The leaf is too long and the outer coating on the leaf is water-proof; so unless and until you fold it (as illustrated in the figure), you can't immerse it properly in the water.
Get some lemon grass leaves from your garden. Be careful while cutting them - don't just try to pull them off with your hand; the edges of the leaves are pretty sharp and you may even cut yourself. Take a knife and  cut a few leaves. They smell heavenly. Now take around 2 cups of water and immerse those leaves in it and bring it to a boil. Then lower the flame and let it continue to boil until a fine aroma emanates from it. Then cool the mixture, strain it and pour it into your ice cube tray and keep it in the deep freezer of your fridge. Whenever you return home tired from work and feel like feeling fresh, just take out a cube and rub it all over your face. It not only works great as a cleanser and toner and refreshes you instantly but also improves blood circulation and overtime supposedly helps with blemishes and flaws too.

Lemon Grass - Tulsi Tea for Cold and Fever (Also called as Kashaya / Kashayam)
Lemon grass tea works as a powerful antidote when you have cold and fever. I've used this highly-effective home-remedy many times and found immense relief. Recently I had a bout of flu and cold accompanied by incessant cough. Drinking half a glass of this tea, twice a day for around 2 days normalized my body temperature and also helped me alleviate runny nose, headache, stuffiness and other symptoms. However this remedy doesn't do much for cough. I had to try other home-remedies for that and I'll tell you about it some other time. Anyway, here's the method of preparing this herbal tea.

You will need:
1 glass of water, 2-3 lemon grass leaves, 4-5 Tulsi (Basil) leaves (black variety or Krishna Tulsi prefered) ,1 tsp of sliced ginger pieces, 1 small onion cut into pieces, ½ tsp black pepper (or 5-7 pepper corns), 1 tsp cumin seeds (jeera), ½ tsp turmeric, 1 tsp sugar candy (rock candy).

Method:
Boil the water with all the above ingredients added until it reduces to three fourth. Then strain and drink it. Don't let it go cold. Have it when it's bearably hot. You can even add some boiled milk if you like.

Toner does clean the skin and take out dirt and toxins. But it also tones the skin. For example many people have skin that has decoloration, from acne marks or the general dark spots. It gets rid of those and gives your skin the natural glow.

Only have one cup of herbal infusion per day, except during acute periods - such as when you have a cold or flu, you can then have it three times a day, but for a maximum of 4 days.
