Is Invisalign Performed by Only Orthodontists?

While there are several differences between dentists and orthodontists, it’s important to understand what sets them apart. Although both dentists and orthodontists graduate from dental school, only orthodontists further their education to become specialists in straightening teeth.

Since orthodontics is such a specialized field and requires the utmost precision and knowledge, only the top 5 percent of dental school graduates are considered for an orthodontic residency. Believe it or not, there are some top-rated orthodontic residency programs that only accept five out of hundreds of doctors.

Orthodontists spend an additional two to three learning how to apply braces, correct bite problems, and straighten teeth. Unlike dentists, orthodontists only focus on orthodontic care and perform teeth straightening treatments every day while staying up-to-date on the latest orthodontic innovations.

While you may visit a dentist for Invisalign treatment, know that doing so is risky as dentists do not have the specialized training that orthodontists have on Invisalign application.

What exactly is invisalign?

It's a method to to facilitate teeth straightening without those ugly metallic wires and braces. These invisible aligners are made from transparent plastic or acrylic is and are custom moulded for your mouth. They will fit tightly over the teeth, but can be removed for eating, brushing, and flossing.

You'll have to replace the existing set aligners with new ones ever fortnight or in every few weeks to continue moving the teeth into the desired position. These are much better and comfortable than traditional braces.

Treatment time with invisible teeth aligners is based on how much the teeth need to be moved or rotated. Since Invisalign is custom-built for a tight fit, they are best for adults or teens but are not as much suitable for a child. [Source]

Dentist or orthodontist ?

A dentist may attend a workshop or seminar to learn more about Invisalign. However, these workshops and seminars are not good substitutes for the rigorous exams and testing orthodontists undergo. If you would like to ensure your Invisalign treatment is in the very best hands, you should go to an orthodontist instead of a dentist.

For the highest quality Invisalign treatment, visit Dr. Jason Gladwell of Gladwell Orthodontics who is a Diamond Plus Invisalign® provider. This recognition means that Dr. Gladwell has treated the highest amount of Invisalign patients and is one of the most experienced Invisalign providers in the country.

In the past, Invisalign was only used to treat mild to moderate crowding or spacing between teeth. However these days, Invisalign technology is used to treat many different types of teeth in both adults and teens.
