A truly vegan lifestyle consists of much more than being cautious about what we eat. It calls for a total abstinence of animal products in the things we use. For many of us, it seems we spend an inordinate amount of time peering at product labels, trying to spy the hidden animal ingredients classified under tricky-to-identify names. One way to avoid this hassle is to make our own products. Luckily for vegans, this often means we are able to save money on the products we use every day.
Some of the most common beauty supply home remedies call for eggs, mayonnaise, honey or other no-nos. But don’t despair! There are great vegan options out there! Check out these simple, inexpensive recipes and home remedies for vegan friendly hair and skin care supplies.
Hair Care
Restore hair health with these common kitchen items:
Avocado
The primary causes of damaged hair are lack of moisture and oil loss. To reverse these effects, reach for an avocado. Mix a fresh, ripe avocado (or cold pressed avocado oil) with castile soap and water. Lather this mixture as a shampoo. For an added bonus, follow up with an avocado conditioner. Mash an avocado, coat hair, massage into the scalp, and wrap in a warm towel. Let the avocado work its magic for 30-60 minutes before rinsing. The avocados will help replace the oils your hair has lost. They are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E – both necessary for quality hair health.
Coconut Oil
Studies have shown that coconut oil prevents protein loss in the hair shaft better than any other oil. It also leaves hair healthy and beautiful. Massage raw coconut oil into your hair and wrap with a warm towel. After 30 minutes, rinse.
Beer
Surprisingly, beer is a great way to improve the look of dry, damaged hair. After you shower, simply towel-dry your hair. Grab a spray bottle of beer and spritz your locks. You’ll be amazed at how much shinier and healthier your hair will look. And don’t worry, the scent will wear off quickly; you won’t smell like a brewery all day!
Skin Care
The next time your skin needs a little pick-me-up, go to the kitchen…not the bathroom!
Exfoliants
Homemade exfoliants are inexpensive to make and just as effective as store-bought options. Try blending 2 teaspoons fine oatmeal (mixed with rosewater) with 2 teaspoons of ground almonds. If you just want to grab something quick, try sea salt, sugar or baking soda.
Masks
Toxin-extracting face mask are easy to whip up. Here are two great recipes to try:
Option #1: Mix the juice of one lemon, 2 tablespoons of sweet almond oil, and 4 tablespoons oats. Blend with a bit of rosewater.
Option #2: Mash half of a papaya, a banana, and an avocado together.
Relax with either masks until it is completely dried, then rinse it off.
Cleansers
Vegan cleansers are easy to make too. Mix this concoction, then lather and rinse: 2 tablespoons of corn flour, 1 tablespoon tomato juice, 2 tablespoons glycerin, and half a glass of mineral water. For a simpler option, try raw sugar and olive oil.
Toners
Try this refreshing toner recipe:
Mix 4 tablespoons of cucumber juice, 2 tablespoons of carrot juice, 1 tablespoon of mint leaves and the juice of one lemon.
For those of us who are always in a hurry, just grab some apple cider vinegar. It will restore the skin’s natural Ph levels.
For either recipe, simply dab on your toner with a cotton ball.
Moisturizers
There is a long list of natural and animal-product-free ingredients you can use to moisturize your skin. Combinations of nut oils, fruits, and flower waters can work wonders. Here is a fantastically fruity moisturizer that is easy to concoct:
Mix a fresh peach with 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and 1 teaspoon almond oil. Add 1/4 teaspoon of orange oil and 1/4 teaspoon rosewater. Enjoy!
There you have it. Hair and skin care products with no time-consuming, eye-straining, product label reviews!
