Herbal Cleansing cream

You are in need of a cleansing cream to get rid of the embedded dust, gunk and grime and also to remove the last traces of any stale makeup in order to freshen you up after a long hard day. It should work without stripping your skin of its natural moisture. If you would like to prepare one such cream all by yourself then here’s the recipe for it:

Herbal Cleansing cream

Ingredients:

5 teaspoons fresh coconut oil
5 teaspoons olive oil
2 teaspoons glycerine
4 teaspoons beeswax
5 tablespoons cucumber juice
A pinch of borax

Method:

Melt the oils and wax by the double boiling method. Warm cucumber juice, glycerine and borax in a separate bowl until borax is dissolved. Add the cucumber juice, borax and glycerine mixture to the oil and whisk the mixture till it thickens. Cool. Store excess in your fridge.

Ingredients:

1 tbsp dried and sieved lemon peel
1 tbsp dried and sieved orange peel
2 tbsp ground almond
4 tbsp wheat germ flour
1 tbsp thymes
2 tbsp rose water
A few drops of jasmine oil
A pinch of salt

Method:

Massage well into your body with circular and gentle movements. Leave on for 20 minute and then take a bath.



Lower blood pressure by exercising regularly

Hypertension or high blood pressure is often referred to as the silent killer, because there are usually no symptoms until blood pressure reaches dangerous levels. Recent statistics reveal that at least 10 crore people in India are suffering from this disease. It has become the single most important factor causing strokes, heart attacks, diabetes, blindness and paralysis, high BP affects 30% of the country's urban population and 10% of the rural folk. This piece of news is alarming and certainly a cause for concern.

So those of you who have been diagnosed with this disease, along with your daily dose of prescribed medicine, amend your current sedentary lifestyle. Don’t seek refuge under excuses like lack of time. Do manage to squeeze in a few hours for yourself in your hectic jam-packed work schedule. Health should be your first priority and your primary concern. After all, if health is lost, all is lost. (with appropriate changes in the original proverb.)

Pranayamas (especially, Kapalabhati and Anulom-vilom) along with regular exercise, like yoga or even brisk walking will show marked improvement in your condition. Home remedies for muscle cramps

Fix your dull and tired skin with masks and complexion scrubs

In the morning you are as fresh as a daisy, but towards dusk you always end up with a tired look and a dull, sallow complexion. No, you are not sick or fatigued. Ingredients:

2 tsp aloe vera gel
2 drops of tea tree oil
2 drops of juniper berry oil
1 drop of orange oil

Method

Mix all ingredients to make a smooth paste and apply it over your face and neck using circular motion.

Also use exfoliating masks and scrubs such as these at least once in a week. (If yours is really a bad case, then do it twice a week.) Or you can try this wheat germ complexion scrub, the recipe of which is mentioned below. Scrubs are an effective means of removing dead cells from the surface of the skin. The slightly abrasive tiny grains present in a scrub gently sloughs away dead and flaky skin. You should use it carefully though, and not rub too vigorously. For dry skin types, a scrub once in a month will suffice.

Wheat germ complexion scrub

Ingredients:

Oatmeal powder – 1 tablespoon
Wheat germ powder – 1 tablespoon
Skimmed milk powder – 1 tablespoon
Sandalwood powder – 1 teaspoon

Method:

Mix the ingredients together and fill in a small muslin bag. Dip the muslin bag in lukewarm water and gently rub on to the face and neck for at least 15 minutes. Use circular movements. Wash off with tepid water.

A simple trick to get natural curls

natural curlsSuper straight hair is out. Natural curls are in. Also, those with straight hair sometimes feel like having curls for a change. After all, variety is the spice of life. And since most people’s hair has at least a bit of natural bend, so having slightly mussed waves won’t alter your appearance drastically.

If you don’t want to chemically treat your hair to get those curls, there’s an easy way out.

All you have to do is to lightly spritz your hair with salt water and let it dry. When it’s dry, your hair will take on interesting shapes to give a natural wavy look. Then you should scrunch your hair a bit. And, voila, you can go around sporting natural curls. When I first heard of this little trick I was a bit skeptical, but, nevertheless, decided to give it a try. And, yes my straight hair now has interesting twists and bends. At least for the next couple of days, until it’s time for the next wash.



Beware of dust mites on your pillows

Dust that gets accumulated in our houses is a host to millions of germs and microorganisms. Dusting and cleaning the house in itself is a cumbersome task, what with dust settling on sofas and beds, carpets, curtains and clothes. We all bother so much about insects, mosquitoes, houseflies and do our best to get rid of them. But we often forget about the tiny, almost invisible creatures called dust mites, which are present and booming in millions in the cozy comforts of our homes.

At least in India, most of us have heard of the Bael (Bilva) tree. The Bael tree has a religious significance attached to it. With a wise motive, our ancestors probably thought that if at all they attach an aura of religious sanctity to precious herbs and trees, the future generations, fraught with a feeling of reverence, will feel the compulsion to preserve and cherish them.

But are we doing that? No!! Indiscriminate felling of trees and wide spread deforestation is rampant, resulting in the loss of rare flora and fauna. The consequences of this merciless assault on nature by man to meet his immediate selfish needs will prove to be disastrous in the long run and backfire on him. Homemade conditioners for dry hair

Lavender-treated conditioner for dry hair

Ingredients:

1 egg yolk or ½ cup of aloe gel
½ cup coconut milk
1 cup papaya pulp
2 drops lavender oil
½ cup whole milk

Method:

Whip all ingredients in a blender till the mixture is thick. After shampooing and rinsing, part your hair into small sections and apply conditioner from hair roots to the ends.

Henna conditioner

Ingredients

3 tablespoon henna (mehendi)
2 tablespoon strong coffee or tea decoction
1 egg
1 teaspoon ground cloves (laung)
2 teaspoons ground parsley (ajmod) leaves
½ tsp castor oilrinsing hair

Method:

Mix the 1st five ingredients until smooth. Add castor oil and blend well. Squeeze out excess water from your hair after rinsing your hair of shampoo. Then apply this mixture as explained in the previous method. Henna powder is used in combination with other ingredients, so it won’t make your hair dry. So go ahead and use it on dry hair. This conditioner also suits any hair type.

Melt waxes using double boiling method and add almond and olive oil. Stir in glycerine and rose water slowly. Continue to stir until the mixture is thick. Apply moisturizer lavishly all over your face, forehead, not forgetting the centre of your brows and neck.
