Natural Treatments for Sun Damaged Skin

The summer months are an excellent time to shake off the heavy layers of clothing that you've been wearing all winter and let your skin soak up a little vitamin D with the sunlight. With all kinds of outdoor activities to take advantage of; from long days spent at nearby lakes or rivers, to sports like hiking and biking, to BBQs and outdoor games in the evening; you're sure to get your fill of fun in the sun. But if you fail to adequately cover up or slather on enough sunblock, the unfortunate side effects could include sunburn and skin damage. And if you're hesitant to use chemical means to treat your tortured epidermis, you'll be happy to know that there are plenty of natural remedies that will soothe sunburned skin and help to combat the damage caused by solar rays. Here are just a few to try.

Aloe Vera. Nearly every treatment you find in the store will have this essential healing ingredient in it anyway, so why not go right to the source by growing an aloe plant? That way, when you find yourself in need of a sunburn remedy, all you have to do is break off a leaf, crack it open, and put the cool goo directly on your skin.

Coconut oil. This all natural product is not only hydrating, helping to combat the pain and dryness of a sunburn, but it is also a natural exfoliant, which means it can slough off dead skin cells as it heals your damaged skin so that you don't have to deal with the peeling that is often the end result of a sunburn. Plus, it smells great!

Ching wan huang. This herbal treatment comes from traditional Chinese medicine, and the combination of natural ingredients is used to soothe pain, reduce inflammation, and speed the healing time of burns by helping tissue to regenerate more quickly. The main benefit of this ointment is that it helps to reduce the pain associated with burns almost immediately, and those who use it swear that burns heal faster when it is used. The downside is that it smells pretty awful.

Vitamin E oil. People have been using vitamin E oil for ages to hydrate and rejuvenate skin, and it works to combat sunburns by stabilizing free radicals produced by exposure to UV rays. In combination with apple cider vinegar (often applied by adding a few cups to a lukewarm bath), you should be able to soothe a burn and reduce potential damage in no time.

Lemon juice. Even girls in beauty college know that lemon juice is great for bleaching (many use it to put natural highlights in their hair during the summer or combat the yellowing that some nail polishes cause). And it can also be used to reduce the appearance of dark spots on the skin caused by sun damage. It may take quite a while (as much as several weeks with daily application) and because of the high acidity of lemon juice, it could also dry your skin. But if you leave it on for a short time each day (about 10-15 minutes, for example) and then rinse it off with water, you could see some lightening of pigmented spots.
