Is Your Face Soap Ruining Your Skin?

If you’ve ever wondered why the condition of your skin isn’t as nice and smooth as you’d like it to be, the answer may be in your cleansing routine. Our faces are made of much more delicate skin than is on most of the rest of our body. While using a regular bar soap to washing everything below the neck is okay, using the same soap on your face is a big no-no. Even if you have extra oily skin, a regular body or hand soap is much too strong for the pH levels of your face.

The skin on our face maintains a natural balanced pH level of about 5.0-5.6. If your skin is oily, it might be a bit higher than that. However, regular body and hand soaps contain a pH level of about 8.0-10.0. Using these soaps on our face is essentially stripping your face dry. This can cause dryness, breakouts, and premature aging. Using these soaps over time can cause your skin to dehydrate and become thinner. Once the skin diminishes to this point, fine lines begin to appear. These fine lines turn into wrinkles, essentially aging your skin.

While washing correctly is important, it’s also important not to skip washing at night. Your body heals itself during sleep, even your skin. When we go to sleep without washing our face, we risk dirt, oil, makeup, and sweat being absorbed into our skin. This too can cause breakouts and a bad complexion. Consider following these guidelines, and your face will thank you.

Prepare Yourself Before washing your face, you will want to get yourself ready. Pull your hair back and wash your hands. You don’t want to spread the dirt and germs from your hands to your sensitive face.

Know What to Use When washing your face, it’s best to use warm water. If the water is too hot, it can dry out your skin. Choose a facial cleanser that’s right for you. There are all kinds to choose from. Whether you have oily skin, dry skin, are prone to acne, or have sensitive skin, choosing the right soap is very important. After washing, use cool water to rinse. This will help close your pores.

Washing Your Face When washing your face, it isn’t necessary to use a huge amount of face soap. A nickel sized amount should be enough. It’s also not necessary to use a wash cloth. A wash cloth can irritate dry or sensitive skin. Gently massage the soap into your skin, using your fingertips, in a circular motion. Never scrub your face. It may be tempting to try to remove dried skin by scrubbing the bejesus out of it. However, this will irritate your skin and cause more problems. Use extra care around your eyes. This skin is extra sensitive. If you wear a lot of eye makeup, rather than scrubbing it away, use a gentle makeup remover.

Drying Your Face Pat your face dry, lightly. Don’t rub, and use a clean towel. If you apply any kind of face medication or makeup after washing your face, wait 15 minutes or so after washing. Your face is super absorbent right after it’s been washed. Allow it time to breathe.

If you follow these steps and remember that all skin is not created equal, you’re sure to have more beautiful, radiant skin. The entire method of washing your face is focused on gentleness. Use a gentle soap, massage it in gently, and follow it up by drying your face gently as well. Follow these guidelines and you will notice healthier, more beautiful skin within weeks.
