Homemade Hydrating Face Masks for Smooth Skin

There are plenty of rejuvenating and hydrating face masks available for purchase at your local pharmacy or cosmetics counter, and while some come at only minor expense, others can be pretty pricy.  You can certainly find options that eschew the use of harmful chemicals, dyes, and fragrances, but these sensitive skin options may end up costing even more.  However, there are ways to get the natural products you crave without spending an arm and a leg.  The easiest way, of course, is to make them yourself from the comfort of your own kitchen, and you don’t have to be a scientist to work out the formulas.

By following a few simple recipes, you can quickly whip up a number of easy face masks that will work for any skin type.  For example, whisking an egg white with a teaspoon of Greek yogurt produces a calming and moisturizing mask that can be applied to the face, left on for a few minutes, and gently washed away with warm water, leaving your skin looking dewy and fresh.  Another great mask can be created from equal parts uncooked oatmeal (buy from here), Greek yogurt (buy from here), and honey (about 1 teaspoon of each should do the trick).  Simply mix, smooth on face, wait a few minutes, and rinse with warm water (try not to scrub since oatmeal can be abrasive).  Your skin will feel smooth and soft afterwards.  Unfortunately, the yogurt makes these masks smell rather funny, but the ingredients are gentle enough to hydrate your skin without unbalancing oil production.

Of course, there are also masks specific to problem-prone skin.  If you find that your face is fairly oily, try mashing half of a ripe banana and mixing the pulp with a teaspoon of honey (Buy honey from here)and a few drops of fresh lemon juice.  The lemon acts as an astringent to help dry up excess oil while the honey and banana keep your skin from getting too dry.  Depending on the state of your banana, this recipe could get a bit runny, so you may want to add some oatmeal for a bit of extra cohesion.  Or if you’re not too keen on lemon, try mashing up a handful of strawberries (4-5) instead and adding them in, since the strawberry also has natural astringent properties.
For the opposite problem (dry, flaky skin) a little extra moisture is called for.  In this respect, milk can be an excellent agent because of the animal fats contained within.  Try mixing equal parts milk, honey, and raw aloe vera gel (about 1 teaspoon each) (buy from here).  Since this is a very liquidy concoction, a good substitute for regular milk is the powdered variety (Buy powdered milk from here.), which will make it more like a paste and therefore easier to apply.  You could also bring some natural oils to the aid of your face by mashing half an avocado with a couple of tablespoons of honey to leave your face moist and free of dryness.
In truth, there are hundreds of recipes out there that can be made with items commonly found in your kitchen or garden.  Don’t hesitate to scout out homemade tinctures online rather than submitting to the purchase of pricy and often damaging products offered by manufacturers.  You know your skin best, and with a little experimentation you can easily make the mask that’s right for you.

An aspirin mask will loosen old skin cells.Crush 4 - 6 plain, uncoated aspirin tablets and mix it w/ a little water to make mask. Or mix them with Queen Helene Mint Julep mask or aloe vera gel instead of water. Apply a thin layer to your clean face & let dry for 15-20 minutes. Rinse off w/ cool water.
Apply a thin layer of plain milk of magnesia, let it dry for 15-20 minutes, rinse off w/ cool water & a clean wash cloth. Plain milk of magnesia will absorb excess oil & temporarily tighten pores.

Make a mask of 1/3 cup plain yogurt, 2 tbsp. ground oatmeal, 2 tsp. honey. Apply & let sit for 15-20 minutes. Yogurt has lactic acid to help removed old skin cells. The ground oatmeal soothes the skin and provides more exfoliation. Honey has anti-bacterial properties & provides a bit of moisture.

Any cleanser will "clean" your face, but if you're referring to your freckles or blemishes "dirtying" your face, or redness, then freckles are permanent & you can cover them with concealer, foundation, etc.
Blemishes can be covered with that same makeup as well, but that usually just irritates them more, so I'd say go to your doctor for a prescribed product if no cleansers are making them go away.
    I hope this helped you:)
ps - an exfoliant like St. Ives Apricot Scrub can help to make your skin cleaner as well! (used once per week) it makes your skin feel super fresh and vibrant, I love it:)

Wash your face and rinse thoroughly. Squeeze a fresh lemon into a small
bowl and put the juice on a cotton ball. Apply cotton ball to face. Repeat
soaking of cotton ball in lemon juice as needed. Let lemon juice dry on
face for about 10 minutes then rinse with cool water. The lemon juice
should make your face sting or mildly burn. If you have sensitive skin you
may wish to dilute juice with water. Follow this procedure one to two
times per day and you will notice amazing results within 14 days. This will also tighten your skin so you dont have any wrinkles.

Hydrating face masks moisturize dry skin and soothe the moisture-starved skin. An emollient face mask must restore natural oils in the skin and provide the hydro-lipid film on the skin.

lavender-scented softening facial milk mask is particularly good for dry skin. It's made with buttermilk and dried yogurt, both of which add moisture to the skin. The clay base of our softening milk mask detoxifies skin impurities while it moisturizes. Just one tablespoon is all you need. Add the milk mask to your hand or a bowl and mix in water. Then, simply relax while leaving the milk mask on for five minutes, or until dry, then rinse. Using this skin softening facial milk mask is that easy! Enjoy your soft, smooth skin!

I have used a plain yogurt or yogurt and honey mask for years. It really makes my skin soft and glowing. I'll try it the next time. This sounds interesting.

  13. Before applying any facial mask clean your face and neck with fresh water. Take off all cosmetics, creams, lotions, in short: everything. Use a non abrasive, non aggressive soap if necessary. When finished, pat your skin dry Even better is to take a hot shower or a steam bath to clean and open up your pores.

  15. Some tips for applying these face masks:

Apply the mask only to clean face.
Wipe your face properly and ensure no moisture is retained
Avoid applying the mask around the eyes and lips.
Try a little patch of the pack on your skin to check whether you have any itching or burning sensation.
After using a face mask, use a sea salt spray or dilute1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in 1 cup of cool water which are effective toners and lock in the effects.
