Highly Effective Indian Home remedies For Delayed Periods

Delayed periods or Irregular menstrual periods have become very common these days for a lot of women in their reproductive age and they suffer great agonies when their period does not come on time. A delay of 4-5 days may be fine but if it exceeds 8 days, then it's certainly a cause for concern.

In this post, I'll be sharing highly effective Indian home remedies for your delayed periods.

I'd been a long sufferer of irregular periods during my teenage to early twenties. I've tried most of the recipes here, along with Kapalabhati pranayama, yoga poses, mudras and other lifestyle habits.

Now my periods are extremely regular like clockwork; not a day less or more than 28. When I look back, I'm surprised how I managed those years of anxiety and fear about my late periods.

Possible Causes of Delayed Periods

Irregularity in menstruation can be due to a number of causes. There may be underdevelopment or congestion of genital organs.

Constitutional diseases, like anemia, tuberculosis and even chronic malaria are some diseases also commonly responsible for causing scanty menses at prolonged intervals.

Some women suffer from endocrinal disorders, like hypothyroidism, toxic goiter, PCOS/ PCOD and other hormonal disturbances.

The best thing for those who are bugged by the problem of delayed and irregular periods would be to consult a gynecologist who, after thorough check-up, can find out the cause and treat you accordingly.

Indian Home Remedies For Delayed or Late Periods

1. Papaya (Unripe preferred)

raw green papaya

Green unripe papaya is also useful in case of a delayed or late period. Cut a few pieces of raw papaya and eat half a bowl of such pieces or else you can make a simple salad from papaya and have it. However if you cannot get unripe papaya, you can make do with with ripe ones as well, but unripe ones are most effective.

2. Aloe vera

*Intake of aloe vera juice is found to be highly effective when one has a problem of irregular periods. One should start having half a glass of pure aloe juice on an empty stomach once in the morning and another half glass in the evening.

Refer to this article if you want to know the procedure of making fresh aloe juice at home. However, instead of adding any fruit juice as suggested in that article, add only pure water to it.

freshly cut aloevera leaves

If making fresh aloe juice regularly is a bother for you and you have a lot of aloe plants growing at home, you may prepare aloe-sugar syrup to store it for 1-2 months.

For that you have to extract aloe-juice from the leaves of aloe plants and mix it with almost equal amounts of sugar and prepare a syrupy mixture by boiling it over a low flame. When the mixture cools, store it in a glass bottle.

Have 1-2 tbsps of this syrup regularly the first thing in the morning. Alternatively, you can buy organic aloe vera juice from the market (Baba Ramdev's aloe vera juice is also good) and have it regularly twice a day as mentioned above.

* Another way is to scoop out some fresh aloe gel (excluding the yellow part) and mix it with some of jaggery (Gud) or brown sugar and have it regularly on an empty stomach in the morning and one more time in the evening.

Read the post Aloevera For Women's Health Issues for information (& home-remedies) on how aloevera can be used to tackle various women's health problems.

3. Til (Sesame ) & Jaggery / Molasses

sesame seeds
Consuming sesame seeds in the later half of the cycle that is during the the luteal phase (approximately after day 14, if yours is a 28 days cycle) can help regulate your cycle as they help balance your hormones.Sesame seeds are full of lignans, which block excess estrogens. Buy sesame seeds here: the white variety and black variety

They also contain essential fatty acids that promote optimal hormone production. In Ayurvedic parlance, jaggery is considered as a warm food and hence is helpful in bringing on a period. Furthermore, it is high in iron and helps with anemia too; good for those with scanty menses too. Buy jaggery here.

Both Sesame and jaggery contain calcium; sesame, particularly has a very high content of calcium and therefore helps with PMS too. Black sesame seeds have more calcium and a better nutritional value; so these are highly preferable. But even white sesame seeds will do.

* An old folk remedy recommends thoroughly chewing and swallowing one tablespoon of sesame seeds 2 weeks prior to the scheduled date of menses can bring on a period on time.

* A decoction of cumin (jeera) and gingelly (sesame) (Til) seeds, sweetened with jaggery helps to set off menstruation. Add 1 tbsp each of jeera and Til in water and boil it till the water reduces to three fourths. Add some jaggery to taste.

Alternatively you might try making Til (Sesame) ladoos (see recipe here) and have 1 such ladoo, the first thing thing in the morning followed by half a glass of cow's milk.

*If you do not want to eat seasame laddoos, you can dry roast 11/2 tbsp of sesame seeds, mix it with jaggery powder / molasses around 2 tsp and have it during your luteal phase.

*Take equal quantities of Til (sesame seeds), Pippali (Long Pepper), Black Pepper, Dry Ginger and Bharangi (see info about Bharangi here). All these can be procured from an Ayurvedic pharmacy.

Powder them and store it in a bottle. Have 1 tsp of this powder with jaggery 2 times a day, the first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and once in the evening.

* If you have sugar cravings during the luteal phase, which is most common, eating a piece of jaggery or a spoonful of molasses / jaggery syrup  instead of gorging on sweets will help. Buy jaggery syrup here.

Jaggery also releases endorphins, the happy hormones that will help you deal with mood swings of PMS and as mentioned earlier it's calcium content works to your benefit during PMS.

4. Amla (Indian Gooseberries

Amla (Indian Gooseberries)

Chew fresh, ripe Indian gooseberries (Amla) early in the morning. If fresh ones are not available, you can make do with Amla juice as well. Take 3 tsp of Amla juice and mix it with 3 tsp of honey and have it.

You can use Amla juice from Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali pharmacy or any other organic Amla juice such as this. Do not eat anything for at least one hour after that.

Since fresh Amla is not available at all times, you can use dry Amla powder as well. It’s readily available at any Ayurvedic pharmacy. Mix 3 grams of dry Amla powder with water or honey and have it at night after your dinner.

Regular intake of Amla removes toxins from blood, aids the formation of red blood corpuscles, relieves urinary problems and helps in irregular menstruation.

Try this for 2 months at least and you’ll notice the difference. You’ll feel more youthful and energetic as well.

5. Fenugreek (Methi)

Fenugreek-methi-seeds

Soak 1½ tsp of fenugreek (methi) seeds in water the previous night and in the morning you can see that they swell up. Have it regularly on an empty stomach.

Alternatively, you can try fenugreek tea. You can use soaked fenugreek seeds for this purpose also. Boil a cup of water and add 1½ tsp of fenugreek seeds and let it simmer on a low flame.

When the water reduces to three-fourths, turn off heat and have it in sips when it is sufficiently hot. You may add jaggery (Amazon) / molasses / brown sugar (Amazon) for taste if you wish.

Have this fenugreek tea twice a day, once on an empty stomach and once at night before going to bed.

Fenugreek tea is especially helpful for those who are bugged by PCOS / PCOD problems as it helps normalize blood sugar levels.

If taking fenugreek seeds in the morning or fenugreek tea is not viable for you, you may take it once in the afternoon by mixing a tsp of fenugreek seeds powder (buy from here) in a glass of thin buttermilk.

Having Fenugreek helps in resolving menstrual problems including irregular and late periods as well as leucorrhoea or white discharge. It also reduces swelling in the uterus and cleans the uterine vessels.

7. Horsegram

horsegram kulith huruli kaalu

Horsegram is also called Hurali in Kannada and Kulith in Konkani / Marathi. Eating dishes that have Horsegram (Kulath) can also bring about your period as horsegram is believed to be heat-producing food as per Ayurveda.

It’s also good for diabetics. You can have it as Horsegram Saar (soup) (See recipe here)  or this chutney or dosa.

8. Drumstick

Drumstick leaves are also beneficial in case of delayed or late periods. A week before your expected period; try to consume dishes made of drumstick (Sahijan). Dishes & sabjis made of drumstick leaves are especially recommended.

Drumstick leaves have huge medicinal uses too. Read about it in this post. (Also read Skincare and beauty with drumstick leaves).

To bring on a period on time, you can try this old folk remedy. 3-4 days before the expected date of the period, take tender leaves of drumstick (1 - 2 tbsp), arka flower petals(Ekkada huvu in Kannada) ( 2-3 petals only) and grind it to make a paste.

Add some jaggery to it and consume it till you get your period.(Arka flowers and leaves should not be taken in large quantities as they can induce vomiting. If you are concerned, better skip the Arka flower and use the drumstick leaves paste only.)

Now the scientific name of Arka flower is Calotropis gigantea. In Tamil, it is called as Erukku. Read more about it in Wikipedia.

Now most of you are familiar with the garland of leaves used to adorn the idols of Lord Hanuman. These are the leaves of Arka flower. Now I'm sure you can recognise this plant.

Garlands made with Arka flower are also used to adorn Lord Ganesha's Vigrahas. Arka plant has a plethora of medicinal uses. However it is not be consumed by pregnant women as it is supposed to induce abortion.

Other Herbal Remedies For tackling Delayed / Irregular menstruation

* Make a decoction of the aerial roots of banyan and consume with half a glass of cow’s milk at bedtime for at least 3 menstrual cycles.

* Take a decoction of the roots of bitter gourd (karela) at least twice a day; this usually makes the period to commence.

* Saunf (fennel) seeds also found to be helpful in menstrual irregularities.

* Boil the roots of the fig (anjeer) and take the filtered decoction for a few weeks to normalize the menstrual cycle.

* A small cupful of the decoction prepared from the leaves or the seeds of coriander (cilantro) thrice a day is found to be useful in regulating the menstrual cycle.

* A cup of grape juice everyday is also believed to bring regularity of the menstrual cycle.

* Take a teaspoonful of radish seeds and grind it with water to make a fine paste. Mix this paste with a cup of buttermilk and drink.

* In scanty menses: Drink a decoction of Manjistha / Indian madder roots for an entire cycle i.e. everyday to correct anemia, if any and establish a healthy flow of menstrual blood.

[Manjistha is available at any Ayurvedic pharmacy in India. You can also buy from Amazon -  Banyan Botanicals Manjistha Powder, 1 Pound - USDA Organic - Rubia cordifolia - Cleanses The Blood & Lymph - Ayurveda]

* Eating raw carrots also stimulate menstruation. A week before menses eat 1-2 carrots regularly.

* For irregular menstruation, make a hot infusion of neem bark and take one cup in the morning, noon and evening until cured.

Pranayam and Yoga for treating irregular periods

* Practising Kapalabhati Pranayam for 5 minutes each time, twice a day helps to regularize the menstrual cycle and also alleviates other disorders of the reproductive system. Agnisara kriya is another such practice that helps.

* Padahastana is a yogic pose that can help a great deal in making your periods regular. For more information on this asana, read this post and watch the video here.

Other poses that help are Trikonasana (triangle pose), supta baddha konasana, Titliasana (the butterfly pose), Shalabhasana (locust pose), Bhujangasana (the serpent pose), Malasana etc. Surya Namaskara (Sun Salutation pose) also helps tremendously.

However all these asanas have to be learnt under a competent yoga guru and not to be attempted on your own.

  1. @Anonymous comment #201: When did you start mensturating? Was your cycle irregular always? Or has it been delayed only this time? Please do talk to your doctor to rule out any other problem. Sometimes teenagers have irregular periods for the first few years but anyways it's better if you seek your doctor's opinion. In the meantime it doesn't harm if you try some of the above mentioned home-remedies. Especially do regular exercise and Kapalabhati Pranayam.

An ayurvedic tablet "Kanchnar Guggulu" two tablets 250 mg each should be swallowed with water after lunch and dinner. These take care of hypothyroidism as well as dissolving ovarian cysts, if small ones exist causing delayed cycles.

Is excessive exercise a part of your daily routine? Because, intensive physical training in athletes and dancers, sometimes results in the non appearance of menses It would also be advisable to get yourself checked for polycystic ovarian disease. Also get your thyroid profile done.

Acupuncture. This naturopathic remedy balances hormones and regulates blood flow. Acupuncture may help to regulate periods in women who have polycystic ovary syndrome (read Acupuncture Treatments for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome).

Aromatherapy. In aromatherapy, essential oils stimulate your olfactory (smell) nerves, which can affect emotions and balance hormones. Aromatherapy oils can promote restful sleep, alleviate headaches, lessen anxiety and depression, and help balance hormones. If you’re looking for ways to regulate your period, talk to a naturopathic doctor or homeopathic specialist about the different types of natural remedies.

To cope with irregular periods, figure out why you’re not menstruating regularly. Finding ways to reduce spotting between periods and heavy bleeding during menstruation can depend on the reasons for spotting and a heavy flow.

The main reasons irregular periods are
1 .Blockage of blood circulation to the lower abdomen area due to lack of physical exercise.
    2. Functioning of the thyroid glands is not fair.
    3. Fibroid in the uterus and/ or cyst in the ovaries
    4. Poor health condition and / or lack of exercise
    5. Psychological reasons such as anxiety neurosis stress tension etc.

  9. Go to an acupuncturist. He may also be able to prescribe Chinese herbs for you, that are milder to the body, and have a more holistic action. Acupuncture can be very beneficial for hormonal problems.

can i continue having aloe juice & papaya for heavy bleeding?

    ReplyDelete
  16. @Shanthi:Glad to know that green papaya and aloe juice worked for you. You can continue taking aloe juice and papaya but reduce the quantity. you can even consume ripe papaya now. 1 bowl of papaya pieces and 1/2 glass of aloe juice once a day is fine. However by eating more papaya or aloe juice won't bring about heavy bleeding. But if you are planning to get pregnant please stop consuming these two, especially in the second half of your cycle. And please don't make it a habit to take emergency contraceptive pills like i-pill or unwanted-72 everytime you have unprotected sex. I've already pointed out to you the side-effects of these pills in my previous comment. Take your doctor's advice for some safe method of contraception. Also remember that you cannot rely on papay and aloe juice for preventing pregnancy.

  21. @Priya (comment #221): Please get yourself checked by a gynaec for PCOD or other hormonal problems. Do regular exercises, Pranayama, particularly Kapalabhati. Kapalabhati is excellent for the reproductive organs. Also papaya and aloe juice remedy work well. But the results may not be immediate. But with time your cycle will be regular. Please do read other comments as well.
@Anonymous (comment 222): What sort of hormonal imbalance is this? Is it pcod or soemthing else? Are your thyroid tests normal? To regularize your menstrual cycle, you should not lead a sedentary lifestyle. You should incorporate some form of exercise in your daily routine. As I have mentioned in the previous comments brisk walking, yoga exercises such as surya namaskara and Pranayama like Kapalabhati help tremendously. So do it regularly without fail. If you are not planning to get pregnant, you may take aloe juice regularly during the second half of your cycle. Good luck!

  23. Hi priya, PCOD can't be cured completely; if you have it you will have trouble conceiving. But under proper medication you can conceive. So please talk to your doctor about this. As I have mentioned in the comment, you have to have an active lifestyle. You should exercise regularly, do pranayams and if you have problems such as mood swings & depression do meditation. Good luck!

hi i am 36 year old woman, married with 2 grown up children. I have been having my periods regularly for an year and a half, but now I dont know for what reason my periods have been 5 days late, they were suppose to come on the 16th of jan. I took pregnancy test and its -ve, i exercise regularly, take healthy diet, and sleep 6-8 hours everyday. Please help as on the 27th of jan I have to visit a holy place, where I cant go unless my periods come, and are over, also my husband has already paid for the tickets. Also can you suggest a home remedy to make the flow faster, so it gets over within 2 or 3 days?

  37. @anonymous comment #237: What did the doctor say? I mean did he/she discuss with you the reason for your delayed period. Please visit him/her again and convey to him/her that the medications have not worked. In the meantime, you could try aloe juice therapy, raw papaya and regular pratice of Kapalabhati. But do remember that home-remedies do not give quick results. You have to be patient.
@Anonymous comment #238: 5 days isn't such a long time. It's alright if your period gets delayed by a week but if it gets delayed beyond that, it's not considered normal. But the problem you are facing here is you have to go to a holy place and I can understand your concerns. As I mentioned to the previous commenter, home-remedies don't give quick, instantaneous results; so you can't rely on that in this case. Only thing you can do is go to your doctor and ask him for pills to bring about menstruation; but again from what I have heard taking these pills often isn't too good for health. Anyways discuss with your doctor.

Massage the area just below your ankle bones. It is an accupuncture point and it can help stimulate a late period.

Its normal for your periods too be delayed for a number of reasons including ,

    Problems with your hormones
    Being severely overweight
    Stress
Changes in diet and excercise regiemes
    Certain medications
    Pregnancy

First things first , if your sexually active get a pregnancy test done , you can buy them at the pharmacy and most supermarkets and there usually really accurate.

Secondly , 15 isnt that long! stress is probably the biggest factor and worrying about your period being late does count as a form of stress!!

Thirdly , DO NOT eat raw paper. If anything it will make you feel sick not too mention this is highly unhealthy and discusting.

Lastly , if its still delayed in a few weeks go and see your GP. Being overweight can interfeaar with your cycle and its also important that you rule out any hormonal reasons as too your weight gain.

What is the best, risk-free way to keep the menstrual cycle steady ?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Anonymous10:21 AM

Firstly is depends on her age. Young girls who have recently started menstruating are very likely to have irregular periods at first, though they normally settle down after a couple of years. However, some women do not often have regular periods, sometimes skipping, sometimes being delayed.

The most reliable way to regulate periods is by use of the contraceptive pill. These are taken each day beginning on the first day of your period for 21 days. Then a break of 7 days without any pills is taken, in which you will bleed. Then a further 21 days of pills is taken followed by another break of 7 days and so on. This will regulate the period so that it falls exactly four weeks apart. Contraceptive pills are also (when taken correctly and not skipped) 99.9% effective as a method of Birth Control and can help with acne, menstrual cramping and sometime PMS.

I would advise your girlfriend to speak to a doctor about whether the contraceptive pill is right for her. A medical professional will always give the best advice.

Maintaining a healthy weight is the very best thing you can do for your reproductive health. If you are overweight, work on losing the excess weight. If you are underweight, then work on getting yourself back up to a healthy weight.

On top of that a healthy balanced diet will go a long way too, as well as getting regular exercise.

You don't mention how irregular you are - for some women being within a few days (e.g. instead of being 28 days exactly it may be 27 days one month then 30 days the next) is regular enough - some women are just not perfectly regular and that's normal for them (and also perfectly healthy, and will not interfere with conception when you're ready to start a family).

If you're more than a few days off - like skipping whole months or being off by a week or more, then I would encourage you to talk it over with your doctor to rule out anything which may interfere with your fertility when you're ready to try to conceive (it's much better to look after it now than to wait until you decide to get pregnant only to find it may take months to resolve the underlying problem)

i would recommend against going on the pill. i went on the pill at a younger age and have polycystic ovarian syndrome now, i believe that the unnatural hormones in the pills aided in the problems i am having today.
go to a doctor, and dont let them push you around, this is a very serious concern.

i have always had irregular periods (other than when i was put on the pill) and when i was 20, my periods completely stopped, and the only reason i got it again was after my doctor put me on medication to jumpstart it again.
i was always told not to worry about it, that i was young, and there was no real cause for concern.
unfortunately, i have been trying for 5 years now to have a baby and have been very unsuccessful.
i cant help but wonder if the doctors had taken me seriously when i first showed concerns, whether i would be in the situation i am in now.
    i wish you luck.

there are a few herbal supplements that you can get to help regulate your hormone levels (Vitex Berries, in pill form, as well as Red Raspberry leaf, and also Dong Quai root)
i hope you find a good solution, and dont run into the same problems as i have.

FYI, carrots either cooked or raw can cause your digestive system to produce more chemicals to break it down. In other words, carrots do not digest easily. So, may be some women have menstrual effect based on that as well.

i need ur help and its urgent i am getting married in a week and still hav not got my periods which was supposed to b on jan 26 is there any way i can get my periods immediately.....

    ReplyDelete
  51. Hi Anonymous (comment #252): Since you are getting married in a week, it's best to consult your doctor/gynaecologist. He/she will prescribe you some pills to get your period. Home-remedies need some time to work, so you can't rely on them in this case. But anyways, do eat raw papaya, tale aloe juice or even sesame seed (Til) laddus and you may get your period soon. And I forgot to metnion, do kapalabhati as well. Good luck!

  53. Hi Sanjulika, since your periods have not yet commenced even after taking the course prescribed by the doctor, please talk to him/her again. By the way have you tried drinking aloe juice on an empty stomach? Also eat papaya. You can try pineapple juice, raw carrots and sesame seed (til) laddus. This should help you. If you can, please do at least 500 counts of kapalabhati.

  55. Aloe juice when applied topically on the skin causes itching sensation in some people, but here I'm asking you to consume fresh aloe juice internally. Don't drink too much of it. start with half a glass in the morning on an empty stomach and in the evening drink another half glass. If you can't get aloe juice, eat raw carrots, carrot salad, radish salad or drink carrot juice.

    ReplyDelete
  57. 1 spoon of juice with half glass of water is too diluted. If you can drink pure aloe juice without any probs, it's better. Don't add too much of water. Just a little is enough.

  61. Hi Anon (@ comment #262): If you can't prepare pure aloe juice, you can buy it from any reputed Ayurvedic pharmacy. Start with half a glass of aloe juice on an empty stomach in the morning and in the evening around 6-6:30, have another half glass.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Hi ritu, if you have blockage in one of your fallopian tubes, can't it be corrected by a reputed gynaecologist? And what did the doctor say about your problem? Did he say you have chances of conceiving? Please do seek second or even third opinion from doctors if neccessary. Also for your irregular peridods, you can try aloe juice, raw papaya homeremedies and regular practice of kapalabhati but since it's rather risky if you ever get pregnant, do this only during the first half of your menstrual cycle. Also Kapalabhati is believed to improve all kinds of disorders of reproductive system; but again be aware that you should not do this if your are pregnant; so do this only during the first two weeks of your menstrual cycle. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Christina9:41 AM

One of the simplest ways to normalize your menstruation is to make sure you're getting enough B complex vitamins, magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids in your diet. All these nutrients have been shown to help normalize the menstrual cycle. If youd like to try herbs, black cohosh and chasteberry tree are good choices. You may also want to consider adding natural sources of estrogen in the form of estrogenic foods such as soy, cherries, and yams.

Women miss periods For any number of reasons. It can be too much stress, You can be anemic. Low red blood cells. Or malnourished. Your body will not sustain a pregnancy of the body is not in reasonably good shape. If you are concerned, see you doctor.

  66. sometimes your cycle can get thrown off because of puberty or other environmental factors. sometimes if one is early and another is late, it can seem like a large gap between the two.
If you are not physically feeling any pain, 2 missed shouldn't be bad. If it continues, however for a longer period of time, like 4 or 5, I would definitely talk to a doctor/physician

  69. For your thyroid problem, I believe you are taking medication. For regulating your periods you can try the home-remedies I have mentioned. Please do Kapalabhati Pranayam regularly for at least 5 minutes. Also if you are comfortable with yogasanas, do Suryanamaskar regularly. Eat more of vegetables and fruits. Avoid soft drinks and junk food. You can also try drinking aloe-juice regularly. Start with half a glass in the morning on an empty stomach and in the evening have another half glass. how long aloe vera juice take to work

    ReplyDelete
  75. @Anonymous comment #275: From the symptoms that you have described, delayed periods, acne and all, it looks like you have pcod. What did the doctor say? If you have pcod, yu will have period problem, acne and also unwanted hair on chin, on your chest etc. Anyways, confirm it with your doctor. Since you are not married and not trying to get pregnant, you can take aloe juice regularly. Please refer to the earlier comments on the quantity of aloe juice to be taken. You should also do Kapalabhati pranaaym regularly. And also cut down on fried foods, non-veg and and sweets. If you are overweight by any chance, try to lose some weight also. This will also help a lot in regularizing your periods. Suryanamaskar is also a wonderful exercise, especially useful for period problems.

hi im 19 and suffer from irregular periods from the very beginning.lately i have got worried about them and my periods delay upto 10-15 days.my mother also has a problem of irregular periods.i got my thyroid profile done and it was normal.i was overweight and have reduced 10 kgs(in 3 months)..still have to reduce 10 more to be ideal weight for my height.recently i became sexually active and despite of using a condom the semen went in my vagina.i had i pill within an hour and since then have had periods twice.i have a healthy diet but practically no exercise.im scared to visit a doctor as they would reveal about my virginity to my family.please guide me.what should i do ?

    ReplyDelete
  79. @Anonymous comment #280: Please get yourself checked by a gynaec to see if you have pcod. You need not worry about the doctor revealing about your loss of virginity as he/she will only do pelvic ultrasound scan to see if you have polycystic ovarian syndrome/disease. And please do some yoga and pranayama like kapalabhati and suryanamaskar regularly. This will not only help you shed some weight but also will regularize your periods. You can even try brisk walking. You may also try the aloe juice therapy. Also it's better if you do not use such emergency contraceptive pills like i-pill. Read comment #215

  81. @ Anonymous (comment #282): What do you mean by "I never had a period". Probably you mean that you didn't get your period this month as you have said that pills have worked for you. It's not good to get periods with the help of pills, as you rightly pointed out. so you better do Kapalabhati regularly and also some yoga poses like Suryanamaskar, titli asana etc. Also do brisk walking if possible. Do not give up doing Kapalabhati. It may take some more time -sometimes as much as 6 months or upto an year but Kapalabhati practice definitely does yield positive results.

Also try meditation and Pranayama to ease tension, if you have any. Also do Kapalabhati Pranayam regularly.

A major factor for irregular periods is excessive stress and drastic dieting. Changes in life style that include more opportunities for relaxation, exercise and also the dietary habit can have dramatic effect on hormone levels and menstrual patterns. For irregular period’s hormones has to be taken to regularise it. Mean while you can try this home remedy, take a piece of fresh ginger ground and boiled in a cup of water. try raspberry leaves and nettles steeped in boiling water for five minutes. Strain and drink, add a touch of honey if necessary.

    Hi,
I didn't had any period for 2 months. I tried with Aloe Vera syrup and It worked.. BUT I've VERY light flow of brown menstrul blood.. There's practically no blood, except ocassionally. What should I do? Please Help !

@Anon (comment #340): I didn't quite understand your problem. What kind of pills did you take? Did you consult a doctor before taking it? Don't self-medicate. Always take medicines with doctor's advice. Do not hesitate to consult your family when you have a problem; confide in your mother and ask her to take you to a doctor.
@Anon (comment #341): Do you have PCOS / PCOD problem? In many women suffering from PCOS, the menstrual flow is very less. But if you feel that it has become less only very recently, consult a doctor. Sometimes even iron deficiency leads to scanty periods. In any case it's better to undergo a thorough investigation from a doctor.

Hi , I'm (Comment#341) . No, I have no PCOS/PCOD problem. I recently did my health certificate and the results showed that I've Low iron levels. So that can be the problem in scanty periods? so what do I do?

    ReplyDelete
  143. @Anon (comment #343): Begin with 1/4 th glass of aloe juice and have it once in the morning and then if you can have another 1/4 th glass in the evening. After 2-3 days, increase the quantity to 1/2 glass. You can also add some sugar to enhance the taste. As for raw papaya, you can have it in juice form if you wish. Also try eating 1-2 small pieces initially and then increase to 4-5 pieces. However, have it only once a day after a meal. If you still don't like the taste, try to have dishes prepared with raw papaya in it.
@Anon (comment #344): Didn't your doctor prescribe iron tablets? You can also eat iron rich food. Green veggies especially are full of iron. Also read through these home-remedies for anaemia.

    Aparna,

I am 35 yrs old, married for 13 yrs, have one son of 12 yrs.
I have my regular periods and mine circle is only 25-26 days. I had my last months periods 1st day on 29th July, till now i didnt have my periods and its delayed. I have been using from last month new ayurvedic kerala's Neelibringadi hair oil, whether it will due it , its delayed? I also had little stress last weak as someone close to me had expired and it was a shocking news. From yesterday i have been consuming Aloevera juice and also had in morning dicoction of cumin seeds, sesame seeds with jaggery also. Please help me out to get my periods early.

Hi Aparna, Thank you so much for such a useful tips. I got my period after 2 months by drinking aloe vera juice,Thanks again Aparna.

    ReplyDelete
  148. @Anonymous (comment #348): Since you never had a problem of delayed periods, I'm sure that stress is causing it. Just wait for a few more days and even then if you are not getting your periods than it's better to talk to a doctor. Meanwhile do carry on with the home-remedies. I'm assuming that you are using this Neelibringadi oil for your hair; so I don't think it's causing your period problem. Also try Kapalabhati Pranayam. It can help you get a period and it also helps with stress. To reduce stress and worry, try Anulom Vilom And Bhramari Pranayams too along with meditation as well.

@Anonymous comment #355: This question is not related to the post, but anyway I'll answer it. You cannot really do anything about the size of your breasts, except wear padded bras or if you have the money , you can go in for silicon implants. There are no home-remedies proven to increase breast-size. But if you put on some weight, your size can increase a bit.

Hi ,I am 23 years old and weigh 55kgs, I got my periods at the age of 16 and they were irregular.I lost 18kgs due to irregular eating habits during 6 months of my 1st menstrual cycle.I have suffered from incomplete body growth after puberty due to malnutrition.my upper body is also not grown properly and I even suffer from lack of stamina.even now my priods are not regular so I guess if my menstrual cycle gets complete then my problem will solve.I would be obiliged if you can provide a solution

    ReplyDelete
  158. @navi (comment #359): Are you doing Kapalabhati regularly? Also have you tried taking aloe juice (1/2 glass once in the morning and another 1/2 glass in the evening)? BTW, 2 months is quite a long time; you shouldn't have waited so long. Visit the doctor as soon as possible. Only after you get a period, should you think of regularizing your periods with home-remedies. Also home-remedies do not give instantaneous results, so there's no such quick home-remedy that will induce menstruation.

doctor said that....its only you, who is thinking so much about this..which is totaly normal nowdays......n she suggested me, three ways...(1)...wait and see,(2)...she can put me on medication n birth control pills, (3)...or i can go to gynaecologist...n shez gonna make me do the same thing...which is, put me on medication.....so, i decided to stay with option #1....(wait and watch)....because i wanted to come my periods naturally...!! and then, i found you on this site...n hoping for some solutions from you...plzzzzz....i dont knw wat to say next...but is ther anything i can do???

    ReplyDelete
  160. @navi, you can try the aloe-juice therapy and regular practice of Kapalabhati (for at least 5 minutes, twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening). You can also eat Til laddus (sesame seed laddus), lots of methi (fenugreek) and papaya. Also if you are comfortable with yoga poses, try doing Suryanamaskara, Bhujangasana, Makarasana etc. It will certainly help. Also if you are worrying too much or going through stress, that also delays the periods. So try to remain calm. Try doing meditation, if you like. Hope you get your periods soon, the natural way!

@Anonymous comment #369: Did you get yourself properly investigated by a gynaec? Do you have Polycystic ovarian syndrome? First get to know what's causing this problem. Just recently I got to know of a home-remedy for your problem, that is for those who have periods 2-3 times in a year. An Ayurvedic doctor has recommended this. I hope it is effective. Just take a glass of milk and heat it and add 2-3 cloves of garlic and keep it on a low flame. When it comes to a boil, switch off the flame and strain it into a glass and have it. Do this regularly. I just hope it works for you. Also try Kapalabhati and other exercises side by side.

Hi! I'd like to thank you so much for such a helpful article you provided here.
Now, I have an important question please please please ... Actually, I'd like to know if there's something that can bring the menstrual Period earlier than it's time. I need something that would help force-start it earlier for like few days/ couple of days .. because my menstrual period will come just 2/3 days earlier before my wedding day & for sure I don't want this & also I don't prefer to take medicine to delay it for a long while until I finish my wedding & honeymoon. So would you please provide with something or THINGS like these/ from this in your article to help accelerate & bring my menstrual period earlier few days.
    Thanks a million again,
    Appreciate Quick Reply :)

  171. @Anonymous comment #371: Thanks for sharing this with us.
@Anonymous comment #372: To get your periods earlier than usual, you can try eating sesame (Til)& jaggery laadus. (recipe here) You can also eat lots of carrots & radish as salads, soups etc. Also as soon as you wake up, prepare ginger tea (recipe here)& have it the first thing in the morning on an empty stomach or instead of ginger tea you can just mix 3-4 tsp ginger juice with some jaggery and have it. Do this regularly. If you are a rice eater, then try having horse gram curry with it. (Recipe here)As far as I know, these are some home-remedies that might bring on menstruation early. But then, home-remedies are not always foolproof. So don't be mad at me if you don't get your periods early. BTW, best wishes for your wedding!

You could also try a bout of vigorous exercise and a good healthy massage of the stomach and abdomen area which normally brings the period on.. Another good diet method is to eat loads of pineapple, but that could cause other complications like spots (acne) and excessive bleeding once it comes on:)

Don't stuff yourself with food to gain weight. Let it happen gradually. 179. @Anonymous comment #378: Yes, please try drinking garlic milk. Also eat lots of papaya, if you can't eat unripe ones, try eating ripe ones. Also exercise regularly and particularly do Kalabhati Pranayam.
@Anon Comment 379: If you can't drink aloe juice, try taking 1 tablespoon each of aloe-gel (the pure gel extracted from the plant), once in the morning and once in the evening. You can make saunf (fennel) tea and have it. Heat a glass of water, add some 2 tsp of saunf and keep it on a low flame, till the water reduces to 1/2 and have it once after your breakfast or afternoon meal.
@Anon comment 380: Thankfully, you don't have pcos. Just don't worry too much. Exercise regularly, do kapalabhati pranayam etc. Yes you can try using the garlic milk and also papaya. Til Laadus are also a good option. Include Parsley and Methi (fenugreek) also in your diet. If you can't drink aloe juice, try to have a tablespoon of it everyday; I am sure you can do that. Don't worry about infertility; even women with pcod and other infertility issues can conceive nowadays with proper medical treatment.

There is also a chance that if you have a UTI then your period may be halted due to stress on the body. You may also not have enough body fat to have a period, so anything high in healthy fats (Monounsaturated fats and Polyunsaturated fats) I would highly recommend seeing a health -care professional to determine the cause of you missing your period.

Herbs that induce menstruation are called emmenogugues. Two such herbs are parsley and ginger. If your period is late or you skipped a period, two or more cups of strong tea from these herbs should induce menstruation in a few days if it is taken during or after the regular time menstruation is expected.

you need to sleep in a room that is absolutely dark. Research has proved that sleeping in a dark room at night will help to regulate periods as light affects your normal menstrual cycle. Merely covering your windows with dark sheets can help you to get the darkness that your room deserves.

hi,my ovaries have two different cycles.one month is a 30 day cycle and other month is a 45 day cycle.. is this normal?? will it affect me after marriage??im worried:(

    ReplyDelete
  190. @Anon (comment #391): I didn't quite understand what you meant by different ovaries having different cycle. However if your periods have always been like this - 30 days one month and 45 days the next month and again 30 days next month... I guess it is normal though you might be having mildly irregular periods (an 8 day difference is considered a regular whereas a 15-20 days difference is considered moderately irregular Source)BTW, do you have an other problem like less bleeding, period pains, unwanted hair on chin etc? If not, I think there is nothing much to worry about. But still, it is better to get examined properly by a gynaec. H/She only can ascertain whether you have any problem or whether you will have trouble in bearing children in future. Just stop worrying and hope for the best. Too much worrying can also cause period problems.

Some herbs are very effective in the treatment of this condition. Herbs like Blue Cohosh, Mother Wort, Yarrow, Penny Royal, Chaste tree, chamomile, rosemary and oregano are beneficial in this condition. Consume plenty of water and other forms of liquid like buttermilk, coconut water, vegetable juice, fruit juices, soups and milk.
    Consumption of banana is beneficial.

An infusion of ginger sweetened with sugar is taken for correcting irregular periods. Sesame seeds are also used as a home remedy to regulate menstrual cycle. Have 1 teaspoon of sesame powder twice daily. Take fenugreek sprouts 2 tablespoon daily with your salad. Have iron and protein rich foods. Among vegetables, white pumpkin, papaya, drumstick, snake gourd, bitter gourd and cucumber are good for dysmenorrheal.

  196. @Kiranmayi, please find out from a home-pregnancy test kit like preganews etc whether you are pregnant or not. If the test is negative, just wait for a few more days and your period might commence. If the test results shows positive then go to a gynaec. Also the remedies suggested here are only for those girls who have period problems and not for preventing pregnancy or inducing abortion. For that you have to visit a doctor

    Hi Aparna,
My daughter is 16 years old. She had her first period cycle started in January 2009, then in November 2009, next one in August 2010 followed by one in October 2010. The last one that she had was in MAy 2011. She has not had her cycle after that. Do you thing carrot juice, aloevera juice and Kapal Bharti can be helpful in her case too.

    Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  198. @Anonymous comment #399: I think you should first take her to a gynecologist for a thorough investigation to make sure that there isn't any major issue. It could also be that since she has just started menstruating, her periods are irregular but then to be on the safer side it's better to consult your doctor. She can do Kapalbhati, take aloe juice (1-2 tbsp early in the morning on an empty stomach once in a day would work fine for her), carrot juice, eat papaya, pineapple etc.

I've suggested so many things. Also I would like to point out that 8 months is quite a long time. You should not have waited so long; please consult a doctor (gynec) at the earliest.
