Summer is here, bringing along with it all the sweat and grime. This is the time when most people buy deodorants and anti-perspirants to prevent bad body odor. But there are certain things that you should know about these before you use them.
Deodorants are cosmetic substances designed to reduce the body odor caused by bacteria which is facilitated by perspiration. They inhibit the growth of bacteria and are thus, usually alcohol based. They may also contain perfume fragrances to mask the odor of perspiration.
Anti-perspirants on the other hand work by clogging the pores with powerful astringents like aluminum salts, zinc, parabens etc. so that they are unable to release sweat. Aluminum is dangerous. It has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease, breast cancer etc. Zinc is a potential allergen, most people being allergic to it. Parabens are hormone disrupters that can be harmful in certain quantities.
Deodorants work by neutralizing the smell of the sweat and by antiseptic action against bacteria. Deodorants are preferable because they don’t interfere with perspiration, a natural cooling process.
